I have been experimenting with the screen display options within mame, accessed by pushing the '¬' key (next to the'1' key) to try and get some of the vertical shooter games to fit on my horizontal TV/Monitor without actually having to physically adjust the screen size via the monitors menu, thus buggering up other games that fill the screen correctly. But in using mame's vertical stretch option i have notice a few gfx anomalies, bascially if you try and shrink the vertical screen size down it seems to squash certain lines of pixels on the screen and thus not display them correct display, you can notice this mainly on a screen with alot of text on, some of the letters wont be display correctly. Does anybody know of a way to correct this anomalie? Would also shrinking the horizontal display correct the problem so the correct aspect iof the screen is kept?

I don't think there is a way to shrink (or enlarge) a game's native screen size in software without introducing artifacts of some sort.  For example, say you are trying to have MAME display a 256 line game with only 240 lines -- what do you expect it to do with the extra 16?

I'm guessing this feature is some sort of software scaling, hence the result is unavoidable. Even Advancemame on auto displays this result. I think you can set the values for the different features - fractional and integer - though I haven't messed with this. The only reason that comes to mind for this feature in mame is if you're using a TV....OH, I hadn't thought to recommend this to people...hmmm, wouldn't help Windows/your fe, though.....anyways, if you have a TV and need to adjust the image in Mame.

Yeah im using a TV as a monitor. The majority of games are fine its just the vertical games that are the problem. So Advancemame, has a auto screen option? what are the results like, is advancemame still being worked on?
