Speed Racer (spoiler)
« on: May 13, 2008, 04:02:28 pm »
Has no one seen this yet or did everyone think it was horrible and forget to tell me?  When I went to my private showing (seriously it was my friends and me with about 7 random people) I enjoyed the experience and thought that this should have a sequel.  Now I don't believe I've ever seen the original speed racer cartoon so maybe it's an old timer thing were you can't like the movie because <spoiler> rex fakes his death<spoiler>.
Back in MY day we lived on the moon and we had to build a rocket ship from scratch to get to the Earth before we suffocated.

The first 7 minutes are available online  http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1808406004/info

I kind of wanted to see it until I saw the first few minutes and decided to rent it instead.  I doubt it will get a sequel though since it only made $18.6 million, coming in third, on opening weekend, and is being considered a bomb in the box office.  It's also getting horrible reviews and will likely have a hard time making enough money to become profitable.  Apparently the star of the film fired his agent after the box office and reviews came in.

I enjoyed it. Not great literature by any means, but a fun flick. I was not a viewer of the original series and I've been told if you are then this flick will irritate you. I think it's worth going to see for the visuals alone. The black-light/neon look to some of the racing was cool stuff.

It's getting slammed by the media.  It also earned less than half of expectations.  I never liked the cartoon so I doubt seriously I will enjoy the movie.

I enjoyed it, too. Not recommended for epileptics, though.

My age will show....

I was a big fan of the cartoon series....I had to run home from school each day if I wanted to get there in time to catch it.

We took my 10 year old stepson and his friends to it as a part of his birthday stint this past weekend. The boys loved it.

The effects were cool but having followed the cartoon series it was just not the same.

We chose to see it at a Movie Studio Grill so food and beer flowed throughout the flick to keep Dad happy.

alil off topic but man i wish we could get the beer n food at the movies :(

I know the expensive Gold class cinema gives you some drinks and lil finger food thats it tho im curious what it would be like to have dinner when watching a movie

Still im a huge fan of the cartoon (also astroboy hell yeah that would be a good movie if they used the same affects they did in iron man) but from the lil clips i saw they really didn't follow the cartoon which is probably why i won't like it that much probably still a fun film just not really worth of speed racer name compared to the cartoon

There are similar places in the area but we tend to visit:

Honestly the racing scenes were my favorite parts and makes me wish the video game for the wii was slightly better.  If only NASCAR had long jumps and spikes that popped out of the ground.

I was /am  also a big fan of the cartoon.  I watched it repeatedly when I was 5yrs old.

Seeing the movie clips really disappointed me.    I will only be seeing this if it pops on
the free channels of cable.  maybe.

One of my first comments after the movie was that this could translate to a kick-butt racing game. I'm disappointed to hear it's not...

I grew up watching and enjoying some of the cheesiest Japanese cartoons like Speed Racer, Marine Boy and Kimba The White Lion.
Knew the second I saw the Playstation 2 caliber CGI that I wouldn't be going anywhere near this one. Love cars and hate CGI car stunts. The irony is that while the Speed Racer cartoon had some over the top stuff like robotic cars and sabotage, there weren't any cornball tracks with loops and stuff in them. It did have potential to be a cool movie for me if they would have stuck a bit more to the cartoon.

Just based on what I saw of the tracks in the Speed Racer trailer, you'd probably like Trackmania. They just released a free version a few weeks ago. http://www.trackmania.com/en/

I thought, for being PG, the movie was great. I expected much more 'kiddy' moments then I got, though they were still in there. I haven't seen the original, just a clip here or there, but my friend had watched them when he was younger...on tape. He liked that they kept some of the racers, and though it was different over all he liked it. The colors where odd but the racing made up for that, and the fight scene was pretty good lol. The camera was a bit odd but you know I haven't seen that before and it was interesting.

I also heard some of the reviews, at least this one, he didn't like it because of what it's message about big corporations was.

As for it being a game, yea if it could capture what the movie had it would be one of the few Racing games I like. Realism in racing is boring to me, and the more damage they can take the better.

One wonders if they don't lay out movies today intentionally to be made into games.  My wife watches some action sequence and says "Watch.  It'll be in the game..."
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

uh.. the trailer for Kung Fu Panda was good...

Christina Ricci looked like she was 18 (and that was good).

Your screen name has been added to my frag list.

The directors had proved themselves in action and thriller genre. And in Speed Racer, they put these elements with animation. That made this movie both for kids and youngs. I really enjoyed and loved this movie.
