another work related rant
« on: May 02, 2008, 10:49:35 am »
So I’ve been at the new gig for 2 weeks.  While I like the atmosphere, I’m not singing the praises of the new company yet. Like most of the used cars I’ve bought I know it take a few months for the rust spots to show through.

Another guy in my area left for the new company as well. We exited on the same day and started at the new company on the same day.

So the other day we’re eating lunch and he says that he got paid everything he was owed by the OC earlier in the week and he rec’d a check for 2 full weeks from the NC.  Since I hadn’t rec’d a nickel from either place I investigate.

The OC owes me 131 hours (80 for work performed and 51 for unused vacation). So I call them and discover that my boss submitted my term paperwork late so I have to wait until the next pay cycle.  On the 15th they’ll cut me a check for everything.

I’m a bit salty at this point, but the NC should have a check for me so I’m not going to miss a beat.  Wrong. At the NC I guess 38 hands have to sign off on new hire paperwork.  One set of those hands is in Europe.  So although IT, my manager, and HR all know who I am, payroll doesn’t.

So my boss has them cut me an off-cycle paycheck.  It gets delivered to me a few minutes ago and it’s short.  They only paid me for 1 week.  I call payroll to see what’s up and they claim the money will catch up with me in two weeks.

While I can live without the loot for two weeks I’m tired of being the nice guy here.  It’s not like I loaned a guy 20 and he said he’ll get it back to me the next time I see him, I have over a months worth of pay out there and no one seems concerned.  And it’s not like I work for mom and pop companies, both institutions are fortune 100. I don’t know who I wronged in a past life, but I need to make amends soon.

Im sure its no consolation, but when I started my job here I also had my first paycheck for only 1 week of work when I was expecting a full check.  It seems they lag 1 week behind, as in, if I get paid on Friday of week 3, its for weeks 1 and 2, even though I already worked a full 3rd week.  So payday was after two weeks of work, so my second week was not included in that pay period.  Perhaps this is the case?

Anyway, sucks that the old job boned you, hopefully you arent needing that money to live comfortably.

Let me tell you about a guy I worked with.
A week before he leaves the company we go out to a company dinner.
We get there early and order drinks. He puts down his credit card to start a tab.
He tells the bartender to not charge his card, we want it to go to the table when we have dinner.
A few more guys show up - "Hey go the the bar we have a tab started".

After everyone shows up, we head over to the table.
The guy goes to get his CC, bartender says hold on.
He comes back with a receipt, 60 something bucks on his card...Boned.

The following week he has his exit interview.
Turns out he had used to much PTO and now he owes the company 60 something bucks!
"Hey wait, that's what you owe me!" He has to cut a check while still waiting for for his reimbursement.

About a month goes by. We need a truck to move some stuff.
Another guy goes to our regular rental place.
"Hey, do you want to charge this to the card on file?"

Guess who's card is on file? :laugh2:
Boned again...
Half of the people you meet are below average.
