I am very new to the hobby and a new user but I have researched the forums to see if any answers or pictures are out there to help but I can't find any so here goes......I recently picked up a Nintendo vs. castlevania from a guy for only 30 bucks(yes only 30 bucks!!)
It works but the problem is the screen is very light and almost has like white thick lines going down it vertically and also on the left hand side of the screen it is almost black for a couple inches. Now I can play the game but it is tough to see it. I tried to adjust the knobs in the back to see if it would help. I was able to get it to where the black is almost gone but then the enire screen is almost white and makes it even harder to see and play the game. I knew it had problems when I bought it but for 30 bucks what the heck!! maybe you guys can help me on this one...Will a cap kit do the trick or do you think it is more serious? Also it is EXTREMELY dusty back ther ....Would that cause the screen to look like that?
What do i clean that with......Thank you for any help as I had stated previously I am very new to the hobby but I have been playing video games since a kid and Castlevania is my all time favorite nes game so if I can get the monitor lookin right that would be awesome!!
Thanks again......ps It has the ordinary sanyo nintendo monitor

I will post pics very shortly

sounds like the classic "jail bars" caused by a bad boost capacitor .
this electrolytic cap is usually 4.7-22uF @ 100 to 250v depending on make/model
there will likely be more caps in various circuits that should be changed as well .
look for doming /signs of leakage and peeled back plastic casing on the caps.

Do i just get a cap kit then??
I know i sound like an idiot but i know nothing about how to actually fix them...I know i can learn like everyone else has too but i dont wanna buy the wrong stuff if it dont fix it. Also there is no sound??
How much do you think I will have to spend to get it right.......And yeah now that you put it as "jail bars" It is about as close to describe it as you can. You guys are awesome on here......If ya can though please let me know what I should buy and how much....Or since I really dont know how to do any of it myself should I just go ahead and pay someone to do it?
thanks

kits seem to be popular here. never use 'em myself as generally buy in bulk  @ digikey , mouser... etc.
but, i'm sure someone can provide you a source for it.
what make/model is the monitor ?
