CHD Files. What does it take to play these flawlessly?
« on: April 26, 2008, 10:56:08 pm »
I've loaded up a few CHD files, only to find they are choppy as heck when played.  The computer has 2gigs of memory and is a AMD Athlon processor.  Video card has 128 mb.  What more do I need to play these at full speed?
In game room: Donkey Kong, DK-DKjr-MB combo machine, Mame
Current projects: Ms Pac Man restore, Galaga cocktail restore and conversion to 39 in 1 arcade classics machine.
In garage: Galaga, SF2, Space Invaders, Sega Candy Cabinet, Sky Shark - All awaiting some work.  Will be a busy summer!

I actually have never tried playing a chd game myself but have heard that the 64 bit version of mame can make a good difference on the chd games. I think I've read they generally aren't quite playable yet but again never tried and never went looking for info on them so I'm sure someone else will chime in with better info.

You need more CPU power. Core 2 Duo 3 GHz.

If that still doesn't cut it, Vista 64 bit plus 64-bit MAME.
Old, but not obsolete.

It all depends on the game.  The CPS3 games, which are CHD games in MAME, don't require nearly as much CPU power as Cruisn USA or NFL Blitz and can run on a 2.5 GHz P4 without any issues at all.  I assume that the OP has a very weak Athlon procesor and is trying to play Blitz.
