Hey, any MAC Mamers out there?
« on: May 28, 2003, 02:26:57 pm »
I may ahve stumbled my way into a Mac desktop...err....I have no idea of the power or the speed, its at least 3 or 4 years old...and it had a board upgrade installed "by a local computer place".  My aunt, a teacher, bought it.

I remember messing around with it, but I couldn't tell you how fast the processor ran.  Tell me...
Mac Guru's....can you run MacMame on the older processor macs?

Note, its definately a power-something...its not like a classic mac :)   Once I get the specs  I might be able to provide more detail, I think the monitor and "motherboard" are all in one, I was thinking of hacking it to hell and making a Mini-desktop mame out of it......but have no idea what do do since I consider most macs to be most useful as boatanchors!

What OS is on it?

It appears that macmame will run on system 7  however "If you are using System 7, or an early version of OS 8, you should download the Appearance Manager 1.0.2. Not only will it work on your machine, but you'll get the full power of the new front-end."

So I'd say as long as the system can run OS 7 you should be fine.

Is the monitor seperate from the computer?  If it will boot up, check under the apple menu for "system profiler".  That will give you a lot of information.  If it is a one piece unit, it is probably a 5000 series.  5200/75, 5300/100, 5260/100/120, 5400/120/200, or the 5500 series running 225/250 Mhz.  The board upgrade may be a G3 upgrade,  that will allow you to run newer roms.  Let me know if you need some help,  I repair them all the time (even though I hate them).  www.macx.com is a good place for replacement parts.
What is that pappy?

no, no, no, I do believe they are a fine computer! I even droped one off a desk and it still worked! Granted I hate Mac OS before OS X and Macs are always too much cash for me anyway... I sort of liked those mid/late 90's Macs! I am wierd though.

When I snag it I'll start investigating.  I have a working Apple II+ with amber monitor about 10 feet away from me right now, but I'm pretty sure that wont run mame ;)

Once I get it in hand I'll probably have a few more questions...questions like..."who buys this sh1t"..etc ;)
Thanks for the replies....
