Flyback interchangability?
« on: April 18, 2008, 10:34:16 pm »
I have an brand new WG 25" chassis that arrived broken with the board cracked. I parted out the caps, but the flyback is still on the board. I have an old chassis with a focus issue. Can I just swap these FT's out for one another, or are there limitations? Thanks in advance.

NO !   internal windings are as different as flyback numbers ... USE ORIGINAL NUMBERS OR KNOWN SUB
and there are generic subs out there.  ( diemen, asti magnetics , etc...)
some are good , others not so much......

Thanks! I haven't done anything yet, but my problem is, I can adjust the Focus and the picture looks great, but after I turn the machine off for a while, then back on, I have to adjust it again because the picture had gone out of focus again.

well, that symptom could be due to a weak crt , or even a problem in the crt socket...

Possibly, but the tube I am using was pulled from a dedicated MK2 that I was using for months and I did not have this problem until I put a chassis from another tube on this one. When this tube was in the MK2, it didn't have this symptom. I have no doubt it's the chassis. I am going to cap kit it and see if that helps at all, but I am still certain it's a FT. I can get a whole new chassis for pretty cheap and I may just end up doing that. Thanks for your advice.

Did you check if the chassis and tube were compatible?

Yes, and they are. This chassis was doing the same thing with the original tube from the machine. After I insitalled it on the spare tube I had, it still does the same thing.

Sounds like your flyback.  If you have a worn out flyback it can cause your voltages to fluctuate.  This makes it hard to adjust your brightness and focus.

If your flyback isn't too worn out you can usually get a decent picture if you adjust it after your monitor has been on for a little bit.  What happens is that the windings inside the flyback heat up and then your voltages can become more consistent.   If you still have uncontrollable focus and brightness then you need to replace the flyback.
