Lock Picking?
« on: April 18, 2008, 03:16:08 pm »
So...  I need to get into the locks on the stuff I just bought at the superauctions...

1) The back box of the Spanish Eye's pin.  The coin door lock is out already.
2) All three locks on the Popeye Cocktail
3) Two locks on the Capcom Impress:  The coin door, and the door directly underneath that.  I have the key to the door that houses all the JAMMA stuff, but it doesn't open the other two.

Anyway to somehow pick any/all of these locks?  I'd like to be able to unbolt them and replace them that way...  I want to avoid drilling if I can.

If I have to drill, what's the best way to go about that?  What size bit, etc?

#3 reach through the back of the cabinet and unbolt the lock (at least the top one) from the backside.

Drilling a standard lock takes all of about 30 seconds.  I usually go with a 1/8" bit or 3/16".  Drill right in to the keyhole.  Once you get a nice hole in there if it hasn't come off already,  stick a big ass screw driver in there,  attach a nice sized vice-grips to the handle and twist.

Don't bother with lockpicking, especially if they are the tubular locks. You can'r reuse them anyways...unless you want to pay a locksmith big bucks to re-key locks for far more money than you can buy new, matching ones. I prefer all of my games to take the same key for every door.

Use a good drill bit rated for metal and go at it. For tubular locks, you have to drill all the way around the middle part to get it loose. A standard lock takes 20- 30 seconds, a tubular lock takes 1-2 minutes.

Besides, drilling locks is really fun and stress relieving after a crappy day!

I tried that... the gap is too small to fit my hand/tools...

#1 Williams used Fort Lock key # L288 on all their back doors during that time. Check with Marco Specialties and Steve Young's Pinball Resource as well as local lockshops about ordering the key.

#2 Nintendo used  a Japanese knockoff of an ACE lock. Key # K6510 opens all cabinet locks except the cash door.

#3 I've never heard of. Probably all keyed individually locks.

Picking tools are available at:

I think this would be the fastest option.

Unfortunately it would yield alot of clean up. :laugh2:

I'm having the same problem on my Impress' control panel locks. I tried what are supposed to be metal drill bits, and they hardly touched the lock. Also, it's almost impossible to get hands underneath into the panel. As for the coin box door, it's a different key than the top door and there's no way to get into it. If you remove the game board partition, you can get to coin box, maybe enought to force the lock upward.

Did you use the ones with the little point tip? Those are 'supposed' to be for metal but they suck. I got a drill bit set at Walmart that drilled like butter. It is Black and Decker brand, costs around $10, and has all the bits from tiny to a bit over 1/4". All of the bits are gold colored.

Sounds like your locks are case hardened steel. Regular drill bits won't touch 'em. Get cobalt bits.

I think mine are cheap, but they're not tipped like that. They're just black and cylindrical.

That's what I was thinking, as they look tempered or whatever. I called a locksmith and they said it'd be about $33. Not bad I guess.

if a drill wont do it use a dremel cut-off wheel and make a big + cut on the face and then stick a flathead screw driver in the + and twist and the face along with the guts should come off in peice's.

$33?!?  You can totally do it yourself.  Just get a hardened bit.

OH YEAH! I borrowed HarumaN's key and found out it opened one side....um, but what about the other. Of course these locks retain the key when unlocked. HM. A local guy mentioned to me that these locks could sometimes be picked with tubing or a pen cap. No dice on those...but I thought, hey maybe tape would work around HarumaN's key! So I wrapped a small bit of painter's tape around it, jammed it in there, fiddled with it - and it worked! Fortunately, the cab is plastic so it flexed and I was able to lift it above the lock. The other didn't need tape of course. Nasty 'ol locks.

Next time you have to do this, get a flathead screwdriver that's got a square handle.

Hammer the screwdriver blade into the keyhole.

Take a large socket that fits over the screwdriver handle.

Get your longest wrench, or use a cheater bar.

POW.  You're in.  :D

That would work great...if these weren't barrel locks.

I think I was smoking crack yesterday. Something about the lock thing didn't sit right. So I took the key back to it with no tape. Easy peasy. Hmm. Tried tape into the token box lock. No go. HM. I think the lock flange was just jammed or something against the bar. I'd used a hammer to push the key all the way in and that likely loosened it. At least I got it open, though. (The token box lock I'm not worried about getting into - but in case I do care, just for fun I tried to see if I could force it upwards from the inside and I got it at least half way. I didn't go to town.)

You can remove the nut that holds the arm on... that's how I got the locks off the coin door, and the coin box door...

take out your pcb, remove the pcb tray, and you'll see the coin box area encased in metal.  If you take out the screw and two nuts holding the metal 'collar' around the front of the coin box, you can manuever a small socket wrench in there to remove the nut.  Inside my coin box was another coin mech, the manual to the Capcom Impress (in Japanese, not much use), and some pricing stickers to go next to the coin slot (all in Yen, lol).

Cool. I thought of removing the divider so I could fit a computer case in there and then I though it might be neater if I decased and mounted.
