I recall while in the 90's thinking that the 80's where stupid. Now that I'm in the 2000's I look back and remember the 90's being stupid. Well the first half of the 90's anyway. All the bright colored clothes where pretty dumb. Just take a look at the first few seasons of Saved by the bell so you know what I'm talking about

Dude, why is GI Joe nowhere on this list? Loved the series and the toys. Other of my favorites include Inspector Gadget, Robotech, and Thundercats.

I was born in '75 so of course I know all the 90's items, but only half of them do I scoff at (I'm looking at you Power Rangers). When Power Rangers were big, I was too busy trying to master Samurai Shodown 2 and Bust-a-Move  ;D

Hardly.  Gobots are superior in every way.  More die cast parts, more realistic vehicles, more unique transformations, uniformity in sizing, the list just goes on and on.  Transformers are great toys, but Gobots win in build, function, and class.  Their only "better than Gobots" category is the cartoon.

Just when you think you've seen every geeky quote possible...

Given the forum, I'm not really concerned.

There are a few things that were forgotton, however.

  • You spent twenty minutes every morning doing your hair............ and you were a guy.
  • The reason you spent 20 minutes in the morning was that it took a while to get your hair to stand straight up and for the wax to keep it up for your "spike".
  • You had your name, or lines, shaved into your hair.

For a cool flashback just watch Robot Chicken.  I have often said when watching it "I remembering playing with that toy". Plus it is kick ass funny.  Long live the 6,000,000 peso man!!!!!!!!!

Well I finally decided to start watching this show. All I can say is...you are so f'ing right! Me and the wife have been watching a few a night and are almost done with the first season. It is definitely hit/miss, but the hits are great. I love how they get the real voice talent to come in for the skits. How in the hell do they pull that off? My favorite part of each ep is to scan the voice talent and see who was real.

My only real complaint is that I wish they used more real action figures. The custom clay ones kind of take away from the nostalgia. Is it a copyright issue, or do they just want a more poseable/articulated doll?

quite a few of those are form the 80's

The most unique thing about the 90s will be how ordinary they were.

According to the commentaries (yes, commentaries...), its the actual cost of the toy and the pose-ability of the toy. Apparently they do a lot of eBay and thrift store shopping. They also try to cut down on the number of nice toys that they destroy. In some ep (I think the one with Burt Reynolds and the street race) they had to destroy a mid 80's Batmobile that was in near perfect condition. That damn near killed them, but they couldn't find a cost effective alternative in time.

i remember thinking that gobots were for losers and transformers were for the cool kids

That's what I dealt with as well.  I always wanted Transformers like my friends had, but my parents would get me "Go-Bots".  As a young kid you get made fun of for that.  Go-Bots were refered to in the social circle as "Poor Kids' Transformers".   :'(

Gobots predated transformers you young punks... we didn't have those fancy transformers with their "Autobots" and their "Decepticons" and their fancy pants "omega supreme" ....until a year or two later.

I was born in 73. All you 90's kids can't even begin to phantom the things that happen to a young mind when they are exposed to things like "Sha na na" at such a ripe young age..... of course we did have "Chips".... and I remember my parents taking me to see the original Starwars in the theater... the FIRST time it was ever released in a theater!

I know Sha-Na-Na, and have even seen them in concert when I was a kid. Around here though, the Van-Dells are the ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---. I have been watching them perform every other year or so since I was a wee toddler.

Well to be fair to me, retro is IN now. It is much less damaging. Plus, I love golden oldie rock music.

Sorry it was so bad for you.  ;D

P.S. My wife did Sock-hops at De'soto's when she was a kid. Full poodle skirt get-up and all.

Retro is always in for the 30-40 age group.  There's a reason for that...

It's not actually in for everyone else so much as we're in the target age group for retro products.

No.

Desotos is a bar/club chain that is retro themed. Once a month when she was a kid, they threw a sock hop. Lots of people dressed up, they played oldies, and did all the silly dances from back in the day.

I agree, though the 90's weren't THAT boring thanks to the independent cinema boom.

Shar, a lot of those things were in the 80s, some of them in the early 80s. I think 'psyche' came out before you were born. Karate Kid, almost. Smurfs for sure.

Oh no, that's one of my earliest most vivid memories that I have. I even remember the theater that they took me to and that the weather was really nice that day. I can also vividly remember my third birthday party.

Some do, but such far-back things it seems most don't remember. I was just six when we went to see Star Wars. I remember a lot - I think. It's interesting having records of things and contrasting them to memories. I've found some things that really surprised me.

I find that I can remember most things and that I can recall them pretty accurately. What really surprises me is how drastically your perspective changes when you grow up, how when you are small everything seems really really cool and worth getting excited over to you.  For example every time I catch a rerun of "Knight Rider" or the "A team" I can't get over how corny they are, but when I was a kid, I thought they were the coolest shows on TV and I was totally oblivious to their cheese factor.

Well, A-Team I knew was bad (as in terrible). But I was a glutton for punishment sometimes. Also, I terribly wanted it to be better. Knight Rider was a year earlier, two years before the robot craze and stuff in the US, so I can say I was a little naive. Even still, take Mighty Orbots. It was one of my favorites, because I loved the animation and color scheme. But it was just bad.

I honestly had no idea that the A- team was as bad as it was... I honestly thought that it was really funny... I guess that says a lot about my sense of humor.  I had forgotten about the Orbots. For some reason the memory of the Orbots made me remember the old cartoon, Star Blazers (I don't know why) I thought that the Argo was the coolest ship ever. I mean the thing was basically just an Oil tanker that flew around in space.

orion: I didn't see that old anime till after I'd already seen better stuff. The sort of rustic style and the skinny-bone characters weren't to my liking.

Airwolf....well, I wish I could say even the pilot was okay, but recently I found out it wasn't. Now Firefox still holds water - but of course that's a movie. MacGuyver was a different generation. He was crafty, but soft. If I had to, I'd pick blood and guts, real-like warfare, or at least no fear of someone dying from your gadget. They're baddies for a reason. Send 'em on their way!

He was crafty, but soft. If I had to, I'd pick blood and guts, real-like warfare, or at least no fear of someone dying from your gadget. They're baddies for a reason. Send 'em on their way!

Do you by any chance watch Burn Notice?

orion: I didn't see that old anime till after I'd already seen better stuff. The sort of rustic style and the skinny-bone characters weren't to my liking.

You won't get any argument from me that there are certainly better old anime cartoons out there, but do you remember getting any of them so far back and over good old fashioned bunny ears to boot?? I would bet that most folks don't even realize that anime goes that far back. I was so impressed with it at the time, that the Argo was one of the first things I ever tried to draw. It holds a special place with me.

Blanka,
Jean Bruce Scott certainly did add to Airwolf, but what she did for Airwolf doesn't even come close to what Erin Gray did for Buck Rogers.

I certainly didn't till somewhat recently, actually. Not knowing of any of it till Voltron came out in the states, and there not being other Japanese styles here (Orbots was Japanese artistry with an American flavor), I thought it was a new thing. But, even seeing Battle of the Planets in the late 70s before all this, and though I thought it was pretty neat, it still seemed a little archaic to me - especially as the characters were so thin and were wearing bell bottoms. I swear I don't recall ever seeing anyone wearing bell bottoms in the 70s in this part of the country.

They both had these stark blue eyes that turned me off, not to mention Caitlin's somewhat strident voice didn't help. Now Bonnie of Knight Rider - lush brown-eyed brunette with a decent alto - was an all together different matter.
