glass paint
« on: April 02, 2008, 09:12:40 am »
ive got a cab, took the monitor glass panel and marque glass out, but the glass paint is flaking off when touching them, is it best to use thinners and take paint off and repaint, or touch up the paint with same or sim colour, or take paint off and just paint border black or something or stick gfx on it?

Probably because there's really no right answer to your question. From what I understand and from the few pieces of glass I do have, most of these are silk screened on. That's not something easy to match with paint because, not only do you have to match the color, you also have to match the opaqueness. Otherwise, it looks like ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.

Some techniques I've seen include spray painting a clear coat across the back to "fix" the flaking art. Then use water based paints to try and color and translucence match. If it doesn't work, remove the color and repeat. One member just had scratches on the white portions, so he spraypainted the entire back with white to "smooth" out the translucency of the colors.

Removing the artwork and repainting is kind of pointless. Might as well have someome silkscreen all new art onto new glass for that amount of effort. There is a website that does do that kind of silkscreening but I don't know exactly what they have to offer or whether they'll even do custom work. I believe it's ThisOldArcade.com.

Another is to sell the old marquee and glass bezel and purchase anew. A very common technique (but one I personally dislike) is to print a new marquee and sandwich it between two sheets of plexi. Solves any future peeling problems right there.

There's more, but I haven't really looked into them. I'm more interested in preservation of existing art and better replicas.

There is a relevant discussion going on right now. Might want to look into it.
