Need A Board Fixed
« on: April 02, 2008, 12:56:44 am »
I have a spare set of NFL Blitz 2000 Gold Edition & hard drive. The guy I brought my machine from at the auction said the board needs repair. Is there anyone in this fine community that repairs Seattle boards? If so let me know how much. If I can get this repaired I know someone who could put this to use.

Wish I could help you... I've not worked on newer boards... older stuff is pretty simple, less integrated.  If you get desperate let me know... I may be willing to give it a shot. ;)

I'm willing to give any1 a shot. A user on this forum who lives close to me (MonMontha) needs this. If I can get it fixed for a reasonable price I will give this to him. I know how much I enjoy NFL Blitz and I hate to see someone without. Let me know

Do you know what the symptoms of the problem(s) are?

Actually no I don't the guy I bought my machine from said the boards were problematic. He didn't go into detail. I can call him and ask him later today and let you know

*UPDATE*
I talked with the guy who sold me the machine. He said the symptoms are garbage on the screen. He had the board looked at by Betson I believe and they said it was a bad IC

hmm... I don't have any documentation for that platform... or a known good for that matter (which would help in isolating the "bad IC" )

Would you be able to do some additional debugging... (if you have the same platform)... you could swap out the boards with your known good until the problem went away/came back.  This would help isolate the board where the "bad IC" is potentially located.

I am in the process of building a JAMMA test rig. I am waiting for my siganl converter to come in (should be like in 2 days) then I am gonna look up how to connect all these different wires on the harness. Probably tomorrow I'ma buy a power supply. After my rig is built I'll fire it up and see what I get. This whoile JAMMA thing is new to me so I am interested in learning how to hook up the harness, swap boards in and out etc.  8)

Once you get a test rig... then it will be easy to isolate the board... its difficult using a cabinet as a test rig.

If I recall this board correctly (and I could be wrong),  it uses a number of custom IC's and everthing is SMT.     I  usually fix all my own boards, but last one of these newer Midway boards I had with a bad custom I wound up just sending to Betson for repair, was too much of a hassle to get them to sell me the custom and I didn't want to bother trying to swap out a 180 pin SMT ic.

Yup...I agree... highly integrated boards w/customs are a tough.

They have locations all over the country,  may be one near you.  Check www.betson.com to find out.   Otherwise you'll have to call the 1-800 number or email them to setup the repair and find out where to send it (only specific repair locations handle some boards).

I've repaired several Seattle boards.  I can take a look at it if you like.  I'm frequently in the Indianapolis area, so you wouldn't even have to ship it if you're willing to meet me somewhere.

Happ Controls is the authorized repair center for Midway products. They bought out Midways boards, parts and warranty dept when Midway went all playstation and x-box on us.

www.happcontrols.com

I have had good luck with their midway repairs.

As a side note, it is getting more difficult to repair these type boards (NFL, cruisin, etc) due to a dwindling parts supply and several custom ICs that were used.

Midway had ICs made for certain products and now here it is 7,8,10 years later and they are out of stock, no longer made, and since they were made for Midway, no one else on the planet has them as they are not a stock item.

Just had a Cruisin come back with a bad Custom ASIC, non-repairable because that chip is no longer available.

So you dont think I am just picking on Midway, I also had a couple of Nascar boards by Sega that came back unrepairable because the chips labeled Sega part number so and so are not available. Sega is out of stock and since this game is nearing 8 or 10 years old, there will be no more custom BGA chips for them.

Ah, obsolescence, isn't it wonderful?

Be thankful that your classic 80's games use a large assortment of 74 ttl chips and such that are still available. Just wait until those become dinosaurs.

This is precisely why I am buying as many "Seattle" games as I can so if one goes bad no biggie I just pop in another. I am waiting on one Blitz 99 I just bought, I have that on standby as a backup. The board I need fixed I'm going to "give" to someone who needs one. He says he can fix it so I wish him the best of luck and I was glad I am able to help somewhat.
