Seperate PSP modding question
« on: March 26, 2008, 08:28:24 am »
I've been getting the itch to get a PSP lately, and of course, it's hard to ignore all the  stuff you can do with one, so I've been looking into it...anyone recommend getting a refurbed "phat" over the Daxter bundle? From the little that I've been able to figure out, the bundle's the best deal you can find right now, but, the slim's really got a lot of hoops to jump through if you want to mess with stuff. Any advice? I'm not messing with the kids on those forums.

Id just get the phat as you call it.  unless the slim is really amazing get the one thats easier to "use."

Ok... I have a modded PSP, but how do you tell if it is the slim or fat model?   ???

Nevermind, I figured it out...  my model number is PSP-1001 so I have the fat model

It's my understanding Slim owners need a pandora battery + mem stick from an already modded system in order to load custom firmware. Phat seems a ton easier. Looking for a refurbed phatty for $129 and hoping it never had the crap beat out of it is not out of the question yet...  I'd play a new one unmodded happily for a long time, I just know that sooner or later, I'mo be craving some PS1 and emu goodness. (not like I can't do that already on my laptop, it's just....different...)

I'd really recommend getting the Slim.

You can get a plain black slim for 170 and not have to get Daxter (which is a pretty blah game anyways)

They are a little harder to get hacked, but if you find someone in your area with a Phat you can get your slim hacked.

The slims are overall better designed, especially on the DPad.  I've got one of each and never touch the phat unless im playing Final Fantasy Tactics Co-Op missions with myself =x

I thought about the $170 Slim, but wouldn't you need a memory stick anyway?

Yeah... But you're probably going to want more than a 1gb stick if you hack your PSP.

So 4gb stick plus black psp = 170+50 = 220.

Silver PSP comes with 1gb stick and a mediocre game for 200.

Are the original psp systems no longer being sold in retail stores?  I seem to remember them selling for 100 new some time ago but at that price maybe stores sold out.

well since the slim is cheaper and (apparently) better designed id go for that if you can get help modding it.

also thank you for reminding me that my psp is out of date (from a custom firmware point of view).

As far as PHAT and slim are concerned I had 1 of each last week and the only real difference that I noticed was the weight.  The PHAT weigh substanially more.  Not that big of a deal, but if you go on gaming marathons it might be worth consideration.  The thinkness between the two is next to nothing IMO.

As for modding...PHAT all the way.  So much easier.  Google "Dark Alex M33" and you will get the info you need.  My PSP was gathering dust before I found this website.
