Will this bit work for T-Molding slot cutting?
« on: March 23, 2008, 10:52:41 am »
Just wondering which bit is the one I need. I have a 25 coupon from amazong (so im wanting to purchase from amazon.com) but will this bit work for t-molding on 5/8" MDF?

http://www.amazon.com/CMT-822-316-11A-Cutting-Diameter-3-Flute/dp/B000P4NRLA/ref=sr_1_21?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1206283749&sr=8-21

Thanks so much for the information. When it comes to woodworking im lost. I cant tell if the 1/16" is the cutting diameter or the depth???
If not which bit on amazon.com will work?

1/16" is the cutting height...
that's what you want for t-molding...
it looks like a good slot cutting bit...

so just for my knowledge whats the 1-7/8" Diameter mean? does that mean the entire bit itself is almost 2" wide? I guess im just making sure it does not cut too deep into the wood..

Neil

that's the overall diameter...but with the bearing on there...i'd guess it'd cut about 1/2" deep...

I'm having a hard time fiding a slot cutter bit for T-molding in hardware stores in my region.

And im using 5/8 mdf as well and ordering my t-molding from the same place.

Guess ill order the bit from amazon. Another problem solved.

No need, just get exactly what you need:

http://www.routerbits.com/cgi-routerbits/sr.cgi?1207459150_20566+105

It's $12 for the slotting cutter you need, 1/16", the 6700A.

Then it's the A200B arbor you need, for $7.  These are the exact ones on T-Molding.com, but a hell of a lot cheap... and IN STOCK.

(For reference, here're their parts: http://t-molding.com/store/home.php?cat=6)

Their t-molding is a lot cheaper than Happ, though, and you can get 40' for $14.  Happ, you have to get 50' and it's a bit more.

I think in all of my searches for T-slot cutting bits, only one store had a 1/16" t-slot cutter. And this wasn't any big store like a Home Depot or a lowes, it was a mom and pop hardware store. They had some really nifty looking bits, from small size to HUGE! Obviously designed for elaborate furniture making. It was cheaper buying it online so I didn't buy it at their store.

But I figure a 1/16" t-slot cutter is not practical and commonly used since its mostly for 3/4" t-molding and that was used for cheap old furniture and arcades. So its no longer a commonly used cutting size

Absolutely!!  I'm getting my t-molding from t-molding.com but I didn't want to wait and wait until their slotting cutters came in stock so for the last two weeks I've been going to different 'chain' stores, all the major ones you mentioned as well a the mid-level ones, but nothing.  Half the time nobody even knows what it is, which scares me that they pass themselves off as "experts" when I only know enough woodworking to make this cabinet!!  Sears was the only one that came close (with having it on their online site) but it fit a weird arbor, so I didn't wanna risk it.  I finally stumbled upon that arborbits.com website and it was the exact pieces recommended by t-molding.com, for almost half the cost and the shipping is cheap too.

People should save themselves the time and gas money and not drive around because you'll never find the slotting cutter or arbor... just order it online from somewhere.
