Plywood Chipping

recently purchased my first cabinet and it has some chipping at the bottom of each side.  not sure if chipping is the correct term.  kind of like thin chunks of the plywood are missing.  top layer if you will.  most of the chips are small but a few are a couple of inches long.  i tried searching but could not come up with anything.  maybe i was using the wrong terms.

i would take a picture but its dark.  anyways, how do i go about fixing this?  some of it is still splitting.  would i break off the pieces that are not fully broke off and then fill it with wood filler?  or bondo?  seems like its from previous owner(s) moving the cab by sliding it back and fourth.

this happened to me when drilling the holes on my CP using spade bits...little strips of plywood came off the underside when the bit drilled through..


I think that when drilling, it  can be avoided by putting a piece of scrap wood beneath the plywood when drilling...

well the chipping was not from drilling but what you describe is very similar to what the bottom of this cabinet looked like.  i broke off all the loose pieces and sanded the best i could.  then last friday i started to fill it in with bondo.  ran outta time so i didnt get to finish but so far its working out just fine.  will finish it up tomorrow.

Same thing happened to me when I was drilling my CP with a spade bit.



I scrapped it and bought a piece of oak board which didn't split like that. As for the Bondo, from what I have read (haven't used it yet) it will work great.

yup...

that's why you should always use a scrap backer board to avoid any chipout...
