That was an awesome flip the guy did, if you look closely he just barely made it past the rotation point where he would have needed a neck brace or would have been paralysed from the neck down. Or worse...

I think the intention was for him to jump over the sledder. You can see him attempting to jump instead of just leaping to one side. Bad idea indeed.

Or he just wasn't paying enough attention... that sled was moving like a rocket.  He tried to get out of the way but of course he's not going to jump to the side and out of the camera shot...

"to the side" the way he was facing would have brought him either toward the camera or away. He was trying to jump over.
