I think it largely depends on your age. Even people with normal hearing start to lose the ability to hear higher frequencies from around the age of 18 onwards. And from what I understand, it's the higher frequencies that MP3 compression strips out.

im looking for new stuff to listen to

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that while Pink Floyd and Queen are incredible (Rush is crap, though, of course) they don't really fit what he's looking for.  Same goes for Yes and Emerson Lake & Palmer.  That stuff is all 30 years old.

Jeez, who's being pretentious now??  Did you not read the original post?  He's looking of stuff new to him.  He clearly mentions older music as something he has found new interest in.

I have found a new taste for some indie music, classic rock and some old 80's stuff and opera.

Notice "classic rock" and some old 80's stuff?  Sounds perfect for those bands suggested.

havic - Don't pay attention to shmokes opinion on these bands.  Give them a try for yourself.  Here's a few others to give a listen to: Van Halen, Tom Petty, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Talking Heads, BoDeans, Counting Crows, Dire Straits, Foo Fighters, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zepplin, etc.

I have anywhere from 80-100 gigs spread out over 3 computers.

On a side note about a week before I left the bar that I worked at we did a shady thing that I wasn't able to capitalize on.  The dj company that we used sent us the worst dj's known to man.  For example one night  group of white guys in their 20's and 30's sitting at the bar and the dj would play some old Boys II Men or En Vogue type stuff.  Another DJ refused to play any party-type drinking songs and played slit your wrist type Evanescence (sp) all night.  One night a band cancelled for the following night, so we told the DJ Co. we needed a dj to fill in.  So they left all of their equipment at the bar, including a maxed out 320 gig drive of just music, a 250 gig drive of karaoke and a 250 gig drive of videos.  The bar owner said he had a brand new 500 gig drive in the office and we set it up to copy all of the music and most of the vids overnight.  I left a few days later over a moral issue (like stealing music isn't).  I'm kicking myself for not hanging around another day or two and not getting a copy of the music for myself.

My bad.  I missed that in the OP.  It's not pretension, though.  Just a mistake.  I said that Pink Floyd and Queen are great.  I just didn't think they fit what he was looking for.  Maybe they do.   :dunno
