Music Suggestions Please!!
« on: March 13, 2008, 01:25:55 am »
Well here is the deal, for the past............about 13 years of my life ive been listening to metal and not really anything else (mostly Norwegian Black Metal).   Im starting to get a little bored of it and im looking for new stuff to listen to, now i am open minded and i do give things a chance.  I have found a new taste for some indie music, classic rock and some old 80's stuff and opera.   I would like if you would, for people out there to suggest 5 or so bands or artist that you think i should be listening too.  But i do ask one of one thing, please no rap that consist of "smoking chronic", "having lots of ho's", "i have the best stuff and you dont" kinda rap.   thnx everyone

I'm a big old school punk fan and indie hip hop (not to be confused with rap)

My 2 hip hop suggestions are:
Louis Logic and JJ Brown - early Beastie's style hip hop with excellent word play - search for Classy McNasty on youtube
Atmosphere - rock type hip hop - do a search for Smart Went Crazy on youtube

I like listening to stuff from all over.

Theres a band in Norway I really like a lot called Kaizers Orchestra, very much worth checking out. Ompa Til Du Dor & Eving Pint were good albums.

Theres a guy called Nullsleep who does really nice 8-bit techno, you can find some of his albums for free on archive.org.

And in Japanese Rock theres bands like Larc En Ciel and Asian Kung Fu Generation, or Polysics if you don't mind something experimental sounding - they make awesome funny music videos (like Black Out Fall Out).

I don't know that you can drop right into the pop from black metal.  ;D

Meshuggah has a new CD out, just in time for you, and they're not tuned so low anymore that you can barely tell whats going on. Interesting non-standard timing and progression, they're the kind of band musicians like.

There is also a punk influenced, kind of poppy band called Against Me! that I tried to hate because I don't like pop/punk, but I really like it. Its real enough that it doesn't sound like a kiddie band like Sum 41 or Blink 182.

My old school suggestion would be Four Of A Kind by DRI. Probably my most played CD of all time. Had the original on cassette, wore it out, then bought the CD. The 80's is a wealth of great hard rock. Iron Maidens Killers and Number of the Beast are must haves.

So hard just to make 5 pics. I suggest getting Sirius and channel surfing. I can never go back to regular radio or just having an MP3 player.

Enya is standard library production music whenever NBC wants to suck women in to a "very special episode".  They slow the shots down, pipe in Enya, and boom it's dripping with estrogen and cheese.  I hadn't noticed it myself until my wife pointed out like 4 different things they had done with it in one season.

A couple of weeks ago I went to see the Foo Fighters in concer (who were awesome, btw).  Against Me! opened up for them, they weren't too bad, but I found myself growing tired of listening to them pretty quickly.  Serj Tankien took the stage right after them, he was pretty good, very lively and animated, but his is definately a weird style of music.  I like SOAD, so it's not too much of a stretch to like his music.

Say what you will about Enya,  I will agree with Saint on that one.  Nothing in this world better to relax to.

If you can find them, Antigone Rising is a great, all female folk-rock / pop band...Cassidy, the lead singer, has one of the purest voices around.  Kelly Willis is another mostly unheard of country / folk singer that you might find interesting - why she receives so little airplay is beyond me.  If you really want eclectic music, there's always Kate Bush....again, just a masterful voice, but some really really strange - yet infectious - tunes at times.

As far as 80's music goes, there's always ABBA....nothing wrong with rediscovering the classics. :)

I hated them for nearly a solid month... I think I've heard their newest CD in its entirety a few times on Sirius by now. Then I started noticing that New Wave was sticking in my head all day after I heard it. Decent stuff.

System Of A Down has some awesome riffs and song structure, but I can't take Serge Tankians vocals. That warbling and moaning ruins every song for me.  :D

Tool - Really "odd" music about pretty much everything.  Fairly dark and morbid, yet artistically incredible.  My favorite band ever and they put on probably the best shows on earth.  It's just sad that they tour VERY infrequently.  Makes it pretty damned special when you can actually go see a show.

Alice In Chains - In retrospect, a really sad band.  When you think about the heroin issues that Layne Staley dealt with, and how it affected all of his songs, it really makes the music they put out so emotional and psychologically devastating.

A Perfect Circle - Maynard James Keenan, the frontman for the band Tool, is also the frontman for this band.  APC is a lot like Tool, but MUCH more melodic and much more upbeat.  Basically, they're Tool with an optimistic look on life.

Pink Floyd - Very "spacious" and mind-funky type band.  Classic music and it is really good for just spacing out and clearing your mind.
Donkey Kong High Scores:
1): 49,500
2): 35,600
3): 30,100
4): 29,400
5): 28,200

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Your Bones is probably the best album made in the last five years.

Some other relatively new albums worth listening to:

Modest Mouse - Good News for People Who Love Bad News
The Strokes - First Impressions of Earth (though you'll probably like 2001's Is This It more)
Spoon - Gimme Fiction
The Garden State - Soundtrack (seriously, every song on this album is great and it'll introduce you to a bunch of great bands)
The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan
The Killers - Hot Fuss (there's a newer album out, but I haven't had time to listen to it yet)
The Honorary Title - Anything Else but the Truth (this album is amazingly good -- band's not famous yet, but will be if the studios don't kill their sound)
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm

While I can't vouch for it, Pearl Jam's newest album is supposedly killer, as is Radiohead's (which you can legally download from their website for any price, including $0.00), but I haven't had a chance to listen to either of them).  Also, any album of Built to Spill is spectacular.

Mine is 31 GB.  Almost exclusively 192 kb/sec variable bit rate encoded MP3s.  If anyone tells you that they can hear a difference between that and something encoded at a higher bit rate (or no compression at all) you definitely know two things about him.  One, he is lying.  Two, he is pretentious.  :)

Even 192 is probably overkill.  160 is all you need.

It does depend on your audio installation and quality of your ears though. Even at 192 kbps you lose the high end of the frequency spectrum (above 16,000 Hz). If your speakers or headphones aren't capable of producing these frequencies then you won't hear the difference. Even though there actually is a difference. Same if you ears cannot detect frequencies above 16000 Hz.

how many gigs is your guys mp3 collection?

Probably around 300gb with between 500-700 cd's yet to be ripped.  I was an emusic.com subscriber when they had an unlimited download plan.

People keep telling me that.  But the double-blind tests tend to say those people are blowing smoke.

im looking for new stuff to listen to

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that while Pink Floyd and Queen are incredible (Rush is crap, though, of course) they don't really fit what he's looking for.  Same goes for Yes and Emerson Lake & Palmer.  That stuff is all 30 years old.

Well they say they did those tests.

I don't see why someone with above average hearing wouldn't be able to detect the obvious loss of quality. It won't work for everyone, but to say that no one can hear it is a bit far fetched.
