DVI-I to Component Adapter Help?
« on: March 11, 2008, 08:35:30 pm »
I just finally found my TV that I want. I want to use component video with it, but these adapters on ebay have got me a little confused.

The video card I have an opportunity to get is a ATI Radeon 9200SE with dual DVI out.

The one adapter I found said it will work only with  ATI Radeon 8500, 8500DV, 9500, 9550, 9600, 9700 & 9800 series though, and another says it will work with any DVI adapter.

I'm not exactly sure how they work, so I was hoping that someone can fill me in on what I should look for in an adapter, and if it will work with an ATI Radeon 9200SE.

I have a Monster Cable component cable coming shortly to use on it, and it would be a shame to use a crappy adapter when I put all this effort into finding exactly what I want.

9200se does not officially support component on the DVI adapter.  this means you might need an active VGA to YPrPb transcoder versus a passive adapter.  When you consider the price of an transcoder it may be a better option to buy a better card that supports onboard component output, instead.  Of course, since this is a build-your-own forum, here is a schematic to build-your-own on the cheap (YMMV):

Thanks. I'll look for another card. The only reason I was considering that card is because my brother is using one, but hes upgrading in a couple weeks, so he said I could have it.

I don't think I want to build my own or anything. Could you give me advice for what to look for in them? Or are they all about equal quality and it shouldn't matter much?

Oh, it's a free card. Well, no reason not to try it. Might be useful somewhere's else if not here.
