I agree...  I live in Texas and schools are trying to force that our kids learn Spanish.  WTF!  While I think having a second language is nice to have, but should NEVER be forced upon anyone. 

If people want to enter our country they should learn our language and live by our rules.  I have nothing but respect for anyone trying to get into the USA legally and trying to learn our language.   People entering illegally and not do not wish to learn our language need to jump right back across the border, they are not welcome in my eyes.  The first thing they did when entering the country was break a law...   the last thing we need is more people breaking laws.

Do I expect anyone to speak my language when I travel internationally?   No, I do my best to learn at least the basics for that country and carry a translator with me when I travel.   Shouldn't we expect the same from people entering our country?  Damn right we should...

Being multilingual is good for a child's brain development.  There isn't anything wrong with it.  I just wish our schools offered a better selection of languages.  Too many of them offer only Spanish.  It shouldn't be so hard to have a single language teacher that can do Spanish and French, for example, at the elementary school level.  It's not like they are crafting essays.

Duh.  She wouldn't hire them - she would hire a "service company" run by someone who speaks perfect English and funnels the illegals.  Teach her to be smart and use a proxy.

yep....totally agree.  i went to italy and didnt walk around expecting everyone to understand english.  you live in the country, you speak the language.  i just dont like the fact that make cartoons completely for the purpose of teaching children spanish.  they even have toys that speak spanish words for the diego cartoon. 

its all this "open your mind" crap that gets people like hillary clinton in the presidential race.

In Europe they teach the children French and German, as well as English.  This gives the children the opportunities to communicate on the continent, which opens doors to new releationships and jobs. 

I wish I was taught Spanish in school in the states, as you can make so many new friends who only speak spanish (not Castillian).

Employment opportunities widen, and I feel you are given much more respect, when you can command perfect English and Spanish at the same time.  Also it is easier to pick up new languages when you are younger.

In the UK you can take a French speaking class, as it is not mandatory unless you go to a toffee nose school.  I kick myself for not taking it up.  So many hot girls out there speak it.  Don't believe me?

Part of the problem with having nearly all Spanish as a second language in schools  here is that it is useless.  I know of exactly no one who was able to use their 3-4 years of high school Spanish and speak Spanish with anyone from Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, or New Jersey. 

They all say after the fact that it was a total waste of time.

Yeah, but weren't the European's more technologically advanced? I find it highly unlikely that Mexicans will overthrow us and take over/enslave us. Now foreign business interests on the other hand, well they've pretty much already taken over.

My wife is Spanish, she speaks fluent English & Spanish just as I do.  My son is 12 & he is from a former marriage, my son never knew his mother but Laura came into his life when he was 3.  She has been patient teaching him & his Spanish is almost as good as his English is.  I have told him that for the future jobs etc, being bilingual is going to be help him a lot.

hmmm, so multilingual sucks for every nation then.  maybe if we just all stick to our own language, then no one could understand other countries, and then it would force us to take care of our own nation's problems instead of rushing to fix everyone elses.  so here goes...

fwiw....i love true football (soccer) as well.  i was lucky enough to see real madrid play in spain a few years ago.  thats when figo was playing and before the american dollar was worth jack crap like it is today.  i walked out of madrid with an authentic figo jersey, real madrid flag, scarf, and key chain for $30 total...and that was at the real madrid official store!  i look now and the jersey alone wouldve cost me $75.

yeah i loved spain...very beautiful country.  the food was okay (we sampled a lot of different types of food) although i had the unfortunate experience of eating "black pudding".  i think it was eggs cooked with pigs blood.  and when i didnt eat all of it, the chef came out and asked me what was wrong with the food.  ho boy. 

im not a fan of real madrid at all, and i wouldve rather seen barcelona play, but we were in madrid and werent going to make a trip to barcelona.  i was 18 i think at the time.  real madrid played athletico madrid.  i remember seeing an old man get in a fight with a punk kid who was a real madrid fan.  so funny.  the old man had to have been pushing 80...all decked out in a nice suit.  hahaha.

No point in learning Japanese. All Japanese children learn English now. Better to learn a language in which you will be around large groups that don't speak English - thus Spanish.
