mamewah and win98 - games not launching properly
« on: March 12, 2008, 08:50:59 am »
I had mamewah 1.61 installed and running on an XP machine and it was working perfectly. I have had to move my entire mame configuration off of the XP machine and put it onto an older win98 machine.

When selecting a game in mamewah it launches the game but about 50% of the time the mame game does not display but shows as a minimized task. I have to manually mouse down and click the taskbar and the game displays properly.

Any ideas? I saw some references that say to make sure that the screen resolution and refresh rate of mamewah were the same as the monitor but how do I make these changes in mamewah? I did not see any settings for this type of configuration.

Try using the {safelaunch} flag in your commandline_format (it defaults to {nosafelaunch}).

Resolution, refresh rate and colour depth settings are all dictated by the layout you are using - edit the layout with the Layout Designer to alter these settings.

Thanks minwah. I'll give safelaunch a try.

As a follow up I do notice that when a game launches I hear the monitor 'pop' like it is changing resolutions before it displays the game. Win98 is setup for a 1024x768 resolution as well as the layout I am using so that is not a problem but what does mame use? Is it perhaps a problem with the resolution that mame uses for the game and is there a way to change it?

What mame version are you using. If you're using the command line version, just open mame.ini inside you mame emulators folder and change "resolution" from "Auto" to 1024x768. If you're using Mameui or Mame32 it should be somewhere in the Display options.

I'm using and older verison of mame (.98 maybe - not able to check it right now) via the command-line. I'll try the resolution and see what happens.

So far so good. I changed mamewah to use the {safelaunch} option and also changed the resolution from auto to 1024x768 in the mamepp.ini file.

The first few games I launched worked properly as well as I did not hear the 'pop' of the monitor changing resolutions.

Thanks
