Anyone running MAME on VMWare?
« on: March 04, 2008, 11:18:42 am »
My main machine now has Vista on it, so I installed VMWare workstation and put XP on it, so that I could try to some test configurations, etc. with the emulators.

However, when I try to run MAME it says the "machine" doesn't support Direct3D. I looked on VMWare's support and found the string to enablpe Diarect3D in the setup file, but I'm still getting the error when I try to run MAME. Has anyone else got this setup going, and if so what did you do to get it working?

Thanks.

Try running MAME with DirectDraw instead of Direct3D.

Thanks, that works. Now do you know if there's a similar option for Mamewah? I looked in the mamewah.ini but didn't see where I could specify ddraw instead of d3d.

I thought MAMEWAH used gdi.  What error are you getting? Did you install the system files?

When I try to run Mamewah the screen goes black for a couple seconds, then it exits. No error messages or anything. I did install the system files.

I've never tried it.  I believe in your mamewah directory there should be a mamewah.log file.  What's that say?

Thank you, I didn't even think to look at that. It appears as though Mamewah wants to run in 640x480 @60Hz and 16-bit. I'll try playing with the settings.

3/4/2008 12:56:13 PM Desktop display mode: 800x600 @ 85Hz, 32bit colour
3/4/2008 12:56:13 PM Decimal symbol: '.'
3/4/2008 12:56:13 PM Games list read: mame-0.lst
3/4/2008 12:56:14 PM Mode 640 x 480 @ 60Hz, 16bit colour not available
3/4/2008 12:56:16 PM Mode 800 x 600 @ 85Hz, 32bit colour selected after 1 attempt(s) at 1/2 second intervals.

IIRC, the layout determines what resolution mamewah runs at.  So, set that up correctly.
