I'm not surprised to be honest. I am happy that he was able to have the past season to close his career out. The Packers are at a good point to move on. They have a young, talented team. I also think management was right not to pursue Moss - he would have been a HORRIBLE fit there.

Thanks for the memories Bret!

I don't really agree on Moss automatically being a bad fit but they certainly don't need him to be a strong offense.  They needed Favre a whole lot more.  Rodgers better be the real thing or it is going be ugly in Wicsonsin this season.

If Rodgers is smart he should call Jay Fiedler and ask for some advice.  If he is even smarter he will call Brian Griese's AA sponsor.

To be quite honest, I'd like to see the Packers get Charlie Frye from Cleveland. I still think he could be a good quarterback, and think the pack should have taken him to start as Favre's understudy.

Is he going to be any better than Rodgers, though?  Rodgers has been on the bench for years.  If he isn't ready to play now he will never be.

What do you know about Nall?  Is he viable as a second stringer, at least in the short term?

He's a qualified 2nd stringer. Quite honestly, unless they bring in someone else I expect they will have a QB battle between the 2 in camp.

So who is out there that would be worth bringing in if they have two young viable candidates?  Rodgers is a first rounder - they can't justify not giving him every chance to win this job.

Looking at the FA QBs right now... the "big names" can pretty much stay there.  Nall's name is there so watch for that.  I like Tim Rattay - quailty backup, can do good spot duty.

I'll say Brian St. Pierre too just because my brother played with him in high school.   :laugh2:

When I hear of or see Brett Favre, I always want to associate him with Cal Ripken because of the marathon records. Those type of records are where it's at for me. It seems like most people don't regard that record like they might his other big records. I dunno. To me that is an absolutely fascinating record to have, 253 consecutive NFL starts as QB.  :o IMO the others are nothing, compared to that one.

Anyway, I don't even hardly ever watch football anymore, but I wonder, do you guys think Manning has a chance to beat that record? I just don't know enough about him myself. but he is at 160 now.

I know, I know, you are all probably like wtf? Don't hardly watch football anymore? Well I have a few different excuses for that, but the biggest is that I was a huge Denver Broncos and John Elway fan from right around when he was just starting out. I was like 9-10 years old. My family is originally from the Denver area and on Elway's first season there my uncle took me to a couple games at Mile High Stadium. I of course was a Bronco/Elway fanatic from that point on. What a frikken awesome ride that was and at that age, to be a hard core Broncos fan throughout Johns entire career. When he retired, ---fudgesicle--- it was all but over for me. Nothing, but nothing will ever replace watching that guy orchestrate that offense and all of his comebacks, crushing Superbowl defeats, comebacks, and eventual victories. Watching Favre here and there over the years was the only thing that ever came close to that again for me, and even that wasn't nearly as fun as watching Elway.

Still though, 253 consecutive starts! Hell yea man, hell yea. Congrats, thank you and enjoy the retired life dude!

And the Packers keep looking worse, and worse.....

Trade him, release him, or play him. Don't destroy the reputation of the entire program over a 39 year old quarterback. Hell, trade him to a team you play, it doesn't matter! You have one of the best  -if not the best - secondaries in the league. It would be a field day for them.

I wish he would show up to camp already. Show up, then file grievance after grievance once they start trying to block him from participating.

Garcia was carted off the practice field yesterday with a leg injury.  Tampa's interest may have just picked up an notch.

If there is one team I absolutely, positively, without a doubt DO NOT want to see Favre with, it is Tampa Bay. Yeah, yeah, the same division rivalry was years ago. It doesn't matter!  ;D

There is a fundamental block with any Packer fan that Favre simply cannot play for Tampa Bay or Minnesota.

As a lifelong Bucs fan, I actually agree.  Favre isn't THAT much of an upgrade from Garcia on the field.  Garcia deserves the spot he has right now and we sure as hell don't want the offseason Favre drama.  Right now we have an all pro QB, a near starting quality veteran backup, and a nice looking long term rookie project.  And for some reason, Chris Simms.  So we're all set at QB, thanks.

Give it a week or less.  He'll be a Viking before next weekend ::)

The only reason I see it taking longer is Goodell, who was bitching at the Packers to "do something", has, as of this post, not addressed or accepted Favre's reinstatement papers for whatever reason.

I really, REALLY like the guy, but I'm flat-out tired of this "I may or may not retire" ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow---.  With this whole situation, the Packers are correct, and Favre is correct, in how they've been dealing with the other "side", but they're both complete and total ---punks--- with what they're doing.

The only thing I'm calling Favre a lying a-hole for is his constant "I'll always be a Packer" crap.  He's jerking around the fans to get back at Thompson, while trying to pretend he's puzzled about what's going on or why he's being talked to like he is.  For that, I wish he'd take his tired act on the road somewhere.  I also would L-O-V-E for this year to turn into a "Tiki Barber" year so ol' #4 would be seen as the interception-throwing bad-decision-making guy he's always been, who's quite often been bailed out by his teammates, which makes him look better than he's actually been.

Well he's on his way back, although he could be traded.

Man if he were a Viking you would think that it would get confusing playing against the packers. It would probably be difficult to NOT throw towards those yellow/green jersey's.

Now the Packers are saying "open QB competition".  After this year they're probably going to be saying "bye bye, Aaron" too, since he's a free agent at the end of this season.  So Favre will retire again, Rodgers will bolt after 4 crappy years in GB, and the Packers will have to spend another first rounder on a QB and start all over.   :laugh2:

Rodgers is a stiff.  We should have kept Craig Nall instead, but then Thompson would have had to admit Rodgers wasn't worth that high a draft pick.  I didn't see Brunell being as good as he was when he left us, but I was laughed at when I was living in NC and I was talking about Hasselback becoming a good NFL quarterback, but at least my friends were honest enough to give me credit for that opinion.

That makes me 2-4,842,935 ;D

The funny part is, now that Rodgers couldn't break 40% in a SCRIMMAGE, Thompson & McCarthy are having an awful hard time trying to maintain their stance that it's a "competition".

It appears the trade to Tampa Bay is going to happen. At this point, it is the absolute best option for both parties. They need to make it happen quick.

I agree completely here. He may be Favre, but he is also a beat up 39 year old who hasn't been conditioning at the pro level. He'll also be carrying some emotional baggage now. Most importantly, he will only be there for a year and the possibility of injury is pretty high.

Ted Thompson is crazy if he thinks teams are gonna line up and sacrifice the next few years of development players for Favre.
Send them an expiring contract, a low level draft pick and a few mil - more than fair

...unless they trade him Garcia and then just tell Garcia he is the backup.   :-\

We don't need a rental QB for 2008.  We didn't draft a QB of the future this year - we have Josh Johnson but he's a long term project with fairly long odds.  Luke McCown is likely to be the backup this year.  He has all kinds of potential but has never been able to be consistent.  Think Jake Plummer but with less upside.  If we get Favre and he doesn't stay for 2009 we won't have a viable QB next year.  He won't be staying in 2009 no matter where he plays.

Go Jets! Unfortunately, they also released Chad Pennington. Hopefully he gets picked up somewhere. A good trade too IMO. A 4th rounder that can move up in value if the Jets do well this season.

It would be hilarious if the Jets traded him to the Vikings now.  If they are cutting/trading Pennington, they wont get rid of Favre now but it would be nice to see the Packers reaction to that.

I don't think that this makes sense for the Jets though.  They aren't one player away from the Super Bowl.  They aren't one player away from winning their division.  Hell, they aren't one player away from beating the Patriots at home, let alone on the road.  Favre has what?  One or two years left?  What happens after that?  Pick up McNabb as free agent?  Will Kellen Clemons turn into Namath (minus Suzy Kolber) once Favre leaves?

was he that dude in 'something about mary'?

What happens after that?  Pick up McNabb as free agent?  Will Kellen Clemons turn into Namath (minus Suzy Kolber) once Favre leaves?

Favre sells out 16 games straight for the Jets.  They end up with a top third first round pick and take their QB of the future.  Favre may or may not be around next season to start - if he is, perfect, and the new QB can sit.  If not, they probably start Clemens until the new QB is ready.  Either way Favre will get them tons of national exposure and he will sell the stadium out with room to spare.

Two words: FLEX SCHEDULING

They just bought themselves several primetime televised games for a 4th round pick.

Yep, and they don't have to play second fiddle to the Giants this year.  Even in third place in the division the Jets will get more media attention than the World Champion Giants will.

It would be hilarious if the Jets traded him to the Vikings now.

Jets will lose three first round picks if they do that.  Don't think that it would be worth in unless the Vikings give them Adrian Peterson, Kleinsasser, and Bollinger.  Don't see that happening.

Hopefully this whole situation will work out for the Bucs.  Just like our first place Rays, no need to trade for any high priced superstars to be successful.  9=8.
