DVI -> Component adapter instead of S-Video?
« on: March 01, 2008, 11:18:09 pm »
It seems like whenever I see someone talking about using a TV for a MAME cabinet they always use S-Video. I was wondering however if anyone has ever attempted, or has any information about, using a DVI to Component adapter to go from the computer to the Component inputs on a standard definition TV.

Are there any downsides to doing it this way or problems that might be encountered? It seems like you would get a little bit better image quality out of the component cables compared to S-Video, but again, haven't see anyone talk about this. Thanks.

You've missed a lot of posts. There are a lot of people using component. I'm using a Radeon 9550 w/component adapter and a 27" Toshiba flatscreen CRT.

The part where most people stumble is that if you run 640x480 on a component input, there is some overscan which pushes the edges of your image off the screen. You can either use the service mode menu of the TV to correct this or use an app/front end that will let you run custom resolutions.

640x420 worked great for me, and MaLa let me input that as a custom res with no helper app like Power Strip.
