I've built 2 cabs so far and I'm about 30% done with #3.  So far it was stain (dark blue) and poly on the cocktail cab, paint, lacquer, rubbing compound and wax on the mini upright and it will be stain (mahogany) and poly on the full-sized slim upright I'm in the middle of.  What I get around to a bartop or another cocktail I'm going to laminate it some crazy color.

Paint. It was easier to apply in my case, at least .. I got hold of a pretty beat-up Centipede cab, so it was a lot easier to just sand and paint, then put on some new t-molding :)
So a leper walks into a bar and as he gets his beer, a finger falls off. The bartender who is serving him turns and pukes all over the place. The leper, feeling bad, says, "Was it my finger falling off?" The bartender turns to him and says, "No, it's the guy dipping chips into your back."
