My First MAME Project... Still Unammed... Full Metal CAB!?!
« on: February 18, 2008, 10:52:36 pm »
Guys,

Long time Mame user... New to BYOAC and Cabinet Building...

I got a great deal on a old Jamma cab locally. (All Metal!?!?!)  It had a few USB Cord in it!?! It has a 2player CP on it now but I believe from the space I have between the CP mount and the cabinet itself it will allow me to go with an ALL OUT 4 player setup.

Current Stats:
21" IBM P202
E2140 @ 3ghz
1gb ram
Geforce 7100 On Board Graphics Board.
Sidewinder Gamepads (x4)

Questions:

1. Do you recommend the Keywiz (PS/2) or GpWiz (USB) my mother board has both ports but I see future motherboards not supporting PS/2 parts so that is something to consider....
2. Will cat 5 wiring work ( I have it laying around) Do you guys recommend someting else?
3. I believe the joysticks in the cab now are old 4 way sticks. (4 microswitches on them) Will that effect  my keywiz or gpwiz choice?
4. What Game was this?  Has a SEGA sticker on the back of it...
5.  Anyone else with Metal Cabs?
6. Suggestions?

Thanks For looking....    :)

Congrats on your purchase and good luck on your progress

I used the GPWiz eco on my project as I only had USB available. I found that it emulates a Joystick and not a keyboard, so I had to use the program JoytoKey to send keystrokes instead of joystick presses.

I've read that cat5 will work, but have not tried it.

4 way joysticks...just because you have 4 switches doesn't mean it is a 4 way joystick...8 way sticks can be detected by moving the joystick to a diagonal position (like NE instead of N or E) does this cause both switches to be triggered or just one? if both that is an 8 way. You want 8 way if you like games like Berzerk or fighting games...but if you use them to play 4 way games like Pacman you will find that your player gets stuck or confused in tight moments.  I liked having 4/8 way switchable joysticks like MagStik Plus from Ultimarc. These are switchable without opening or reaching in the cabinet

They are Eight Ways then...  Both Switches click..

Anyone have ANY IDEA what game this used to be!?

I think for Emulator Compatibility the KeyWiz is the way to go....
Lets just hope they don't can the PS/2 ports on all the Motherboards...

Thats a promising looking project, however that monitor looks way too small for it. My £0.02.
