Did I kill my monitor?

Ok, so I got a Q*Bert cabinet that someone had laminated over, and it came with a dead vertically mounted tube, with no chassis.

So I yanked the tube and tossed it in the storm drain (for the kids to play with) and set the metal mountin bracket aside.

Then, after pulling endless amounts of assorted arcade junk out of the cabinet and cleaning it (bonus, clean signal for power-supply and an isolation transformer), my buddy and I built a little wooden frame out of 2x2s that look like this.....

My measurements were pretty good, so it was a nice tight fit. Then I took this Eygo 19" monitor, which I had tested downstairs in my office just the night before, and mounted it in the frame. Hooked up a random computer, fired it up, and...

RAINBOW! In the top right hand corner. Could I have messed it up so quickly? If so, so so sad...

Do they have a built-in degausser (like my computer monitor) or do I have to do something.... drastic?

This is the picture from his site of a monitor that HAS a built in degaussing coil. Mine has this same band, is there something I can do to just like... cause it to self-degauss?

I think the degauss is automatic.   Monitor should be off for a period of time (guess 2 or 3 hours) and will degauss when turned on.  Might have to go thru this cycle a few times.

a monitor with a built-in degaussing coil will have a cord that looks like coaxial cable running around the outside edge of the glass(like the picture).

However... I don't remember the last time I saw a monitor screw up THAT bad from gauss... You may have a bigger problem on your hands then just gauss...

Maybe you knocked a cap loose? Does it have a neckboard to adjust the settings?

I know virtually all computer monitors degauss at every startup. You shouldn't have to wait.

So... how much did you pay for that doorstop?

Just kidding just kidding... it would make a much better boat anchor than a doorstop.

Ok ok ok enough of that... but I don't know what to tell you except check your board and connections. Also be sure to check your pins on your vga connector. Bending the wrong pin can do some funny stuff. (And that's not uncommon when moving equipment in a hurry cuz you're excited.)

a) Check the speaker (remove it) -- it may be unshielded and causing the monitor beams to bend if close enough

b) Check for magnetism at that corner on any metal parts , including monitor frame, bolts and brackets. Did you use any tools next to the monitor corner while installing that may have been magnetized (socket set, screwdriver).  Did you use a cordless or power drill next to the tube at any time (many people do this).  A power drill can create such a magnetic field to totally hoze up your monitor!

c) Check for looped AC wiring around that corner of the monitor.. Do you have a wire running up to the marquee light or a top mounted switch that is running right along side the tube? That can cause a magnetic field (it's how a transformer works) if next to metal and especially looped around itself.

d) Is the degaussing cord plugged into the mainboard?  


To get it out, you need to buy or build a degaussing coil if the built in one doesn't work.  There are tips here on on usenet newsgroups on how to safely build one.


If none of the above work, next time I'm in Mankato, you can bring up and drop off the empty Frogger cab and I'll deguass your qbert monitor for you in trade
