MaximusArcade below 640x480? Soft15Khz?
« on: February 03, 2008, 10:27:49 pm »
I've got this installed and running on a machine with TinyXP.  I've tried quickres, which changes the res to 320x240 and will display on the (neogeo) cabinet low res monitor fine, but if I start arcade maximus, it won't go below 640x480, and I get a double image on the monitor.  If I install soft15khz, will that make the 640x480 display @15khz so it will work on the NEOGEO cab monitor?  I haven't got a compatible card to use the soft15khz firsthand, so I wanted to see if this would work before I set about getting a card that it will work with.

Thanks in advance!

hi,

There is something i don't understand.

If your screen is 15khz ,  and you are able to display using your video card something correctl in 320x240. It means that you already have a card able to output 15khz.  Otherwise it won't work.  Or your screen is not a 15khz one.

If you output already in 15khz, soft15khz won't help you.

anyway, you can not display 640x480 on 15herzt screen . in 640x480 the image will be interlaced  .  Maximum resolution on a 15khz screen without interlacing is 640x288 .

I don't know how works maximus arcade and if you can use it at other resolution (i guess you should , did you check his paremeter to change the default resolution?) .

Thanks for the reply.

I'm switching back and forth between a SVGA LCD and the arcade monitor (via a JPAC).  I set the settings on the PC monitor, then switch to the JPAC (which is connected to the arcade monitor).  I can't get the Soft15Khz to seemingly do anything.  With the onboard Intel 845GL video, it won't even install (everything is greyed out), but if I put in a Matrox Millennium II, I can install/uninstall 15, 25, and/or 31Khz, but it doesn't seem to change anything at all.  For the moment, I've ditched all the front ends and am simply trying to get mame to work on the NEOGEO (standard res) monitor.

I was thinking about going to a pure DOS box and ditching the TinyXP, but then I think the USB interface of the JPAC might be a problem, so I'm back to trying to make this work in the contect of a Windows XP mame setup.

I have neved played with maximus, but if you look for a front end that works in 320x240  , mine (AtomicFe) works (in fact it works in all resolution supported by your driver) , and i think Mala should do that too.

I think if you managed to install Soft15khz with your matrox, you can have access to other resolutions. (like 384x288 for instance)

Indeed DOS for USB Jpac could cause problems. And you could have problemes with sound too.

btw, I would LOVE to see some people taking some skins for different frontends and reduce the resolutions to fit at 640x288 just for this!  Text is the only thing that I think really suffers when shrinking like this.  But changing the font should fix that.

Also, could a frontend benifit from using opengl / direct3d and fullscreen antialias to help lower resolution in a frontend?  I used to play some games on my old monitor (640x480) with 16x AA and it looked great!

Thanks for the reply.

Where should these resolutions show up once Soft15Khz is installed?  The windows system properties don't list anything different.

You will need to use another program like quickres to be able to select the available resolutions that windows is not displaying.

You're in luck.  I happen to have a Betson 27" Arcade Monitor and I am running Maximus Arcade on it with a standard video card.  I have a built in Nvidia video card (which works fine for now - but I plan to upgrade to an ArcadeVGA 2 card soon).

First off, I tried using Soft15khz and it ran terrible!  For some reason it did not work and I would see stuff like double images, etc.  I tried for a couple of days and my monitor just did not like it (probably a combination of the video card too, as it does not work for every card out there)

After further research, I made an attempt to get a program called "Powerstrip" to work.  I read that you could change the .ini file for powerstrip to support multiple resolutions that weren't in the normal graphics drivers for the video card.  I gave it a shot and BINGO, instant success.

You can view how I did it here and that should help you:

By the way, Powerstrip is free for 1 year and then you must register it.  Good Luck!
