Anyone playing PS3 in 480P?
« on: February 01, 2008, 10:33:10 pm »
Looking for some opinions...

I've got my Xbox 360 hooked up to my older  47" HDTV that doesn't do 720P... as far as HD, my TV only does 1080i.  Fortunately, all of the Xbox 360 games support 1080i.  Here's the thing.  I'm kicking around the idea of picking up a PS3, but I know many of the games don't support 1080i (Resistance and Drake's Fortune come to mind) so they would scale down to 480p on my TV.  Anyone else playing their PS3 in 480p?  I'm seriously not planning on dropping the $$ for another TV anytime soon, so is the PS3 worth it at this point?

That's pretty weird.  Why would a game that could do 1080p not support 1080i?

I believe there are some games that only support 720p.  They won't do 1080i or p.

I know that was a problem back when the PS3 launched, but I am pretty sure they fixed that with a system patch.

I think it is like the 360 now, where it scales everything to your selected resolution.

I could be wrong though, as I don't yet own a PS3.

OHHHHHH!   I'm retarded.  I don't know where I got 1080p from your previous post.  It's especially funny because my late TV (it just died  :'( ) only supports 1080i and I've dealt with exactly the issue you're talking about with 720p content from other sources (don't own a PS3).  Considering my similar situation you'd think that I'd have grokked what you were talking about right away . . .

My buddy has a ps3 that he plays on a 32" 4:3 crt. It looks and plays great. He brought it to my house one day and we played NFS on my totally sweet 19" tv. ;D

You select what inputs your tv supports in the ps3 config.  (480i,  480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p).

If you have a tv that supports 1080i, the PS3 will output 1080i.

The biggest reason I don't play my ps3 (Seriously, this thing is DUSTY) is due to the fact my old 52" projection will only do 1080i or 480p.

When it does 480p, it looks like ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---. Even my non gamer fiance commented on it. When it's able to run 1080i, it looks good, but my tv overscans everything. I've played the majority of the ps3 games and it seems most do NOT do 1080i. I honestly would say, it's not worth it right now. When the price goes down again (e3?) then think about it.

I paid $600 for this thing and the only games I've managed to deal with till the end was uncharted, and motorstorm.

ps3 scaling sucks.

Do you get updates?  I have the same recollection as versapak.  I thought that PS3 had scaling issues at launch, but that everything was fine with a patch a month or two later.

Maybe he never got the updates mentioned since he hasnt used the ps3 for a while.

I've got up until the divx update... so for the most part, I should be good. I'm pretty sure the overscan problem is a fault of my tv - but games forcing  progressive scan modes only - to me, is a massive cop out on both sony, and the developers. What good is the cell if you can't even give me a damn scaler chip!?!? xbox has a fantastic one, and it cost me $200 less! I'm really not trying to be a hater here, but I'm just pissed that I'm having a less than stellar experience with mine next to the xbox.

If I had a nicer tv I might be singing a different song, but I'm Joe Everyman and I'm pissed.

All of these games will NOT support 1080i. Welcome to the world of $60, 480p games!!!!

Yeah, think I'll pass for now.  It doesn't sound like Sony plans on ever really fixing the issue.  Maybe by the time the really compelling PS3 exclusives hit (God of War 3, MGS4, RFoM2) I'll have a new TV.  Until then, it seems like almost everything else worth having is being released cross-platform.

Thanks for the advice

That is really bizarre.  It's especially strange since the PS3 will upscale 480i/p content to 1080i without trouble.  DVDs, PS1 and PS2 games apparently upscale to 1080i just fine.  Until recently I was in the same boat as you, but unfortunately, my TV just died, so my only TV right now is a SD tube set.  Dunno when I'll be able to afford to upgrade.

Yea, to be completely fair to sony - the xmb does indeed display in 1080i.

I just wish the developers would figure it out......

Sony's got a big year ahead of them. I look forward to the new games, hopefully, they can turn this thing around.

Shmokes,

Are you saying that the PS3 upconverts standard DVD's to 1080i?  If so, does it do this over a component connection?  I know the 360 has some upconvert capabilities, but it only does it over a VGA connection.

That is what I'm saying, though I can't say whether it does it over component connection.  I don't know why it wouldn't, though.  You can do 1080p over component.  I don't have a PS3 so I can't test it for you, but Google might provide the answer to your question.

dizzle, check out the playstation.com forums, or gamefaqs. Those crazy fanboys will have the answer. I'm really, too lazy to check. I've heard both, either it works or it doesn't.

I usually can't stomach the forums on some of the other sites (IGN, Playstation.com, etc.)  I usually have to wade through pages and pages of rabid fanboy nonsense before I get to an intelligent answer.  That's why I come here.  ;D

A google search should be easy enough though...

Yeah, think I'll pass for now.  It doesn't sound like Sony plans on ever really fixing the issue.

Sony HAS fixed the issue.  I really haven't the foggiest what the above poster is saying.

The PS3 can output a 720p game as 1080i.  It will scale it internally within the PS3.  I have personally tried it as my set does 1080i as well.  All you have to do is during setup it asks what inputs your TV supports.   Select 1080i ONLY and it will upscale anything from the PS3 to output as 1080i (including DVDs)

Please read up on it (from official sites) before writing it off based on the feedback from 1 person.  This has been fixed for close to a year now.

Thanks bbodin,

Hmmmm....  guess I may have to just see for myself if it it works or not.  From what I read in the home theater gaming board of AVS Forums, (pretty recent posts if I remember correctly) there still seemed to be an issue.  There was actually one guy kicking around the idea of buying a scaler to solve the problem. (cha-ching)  But then the guy at the local gamestop looked at me like I was crazy when I mentioned I wouldn't be able to play 720p games in hi-def on my 480p/1080i hdtv.

My set only supports outputs of 1080i and 540p.  Like I said, all games are running at 1080i on my set.  I can take a picture of it in action if you want  :)

I have my ps3 set to play 480p, and 1080i.

I will switch my selection to 1080i and report back with my findings. I am doubtful, as I can't seem to find this information posted on any of the official sony sites, corporate-modded forums, etc.

If this is true, I'm still going to be pissed. Why the hell would it downscale instead of upscale?

Pure fail.

Thanks for the info bbodin, I will be sure to try it tonight.

It wasn't supposed to be, but now that I look at it, and read it to some of my co-workers, I guess it works, lol!!

I'm going to make one of those motivational posters with that text at the bottom.

But seriously....I'm not a fanboy, x-bot or whatever...I just want my ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- to work, and I don't want others having the same problems that I am having.

It didn't work.

It stretched the image vertically and cut off about 30% of the picture. This could also be a fault of the tv - but I'm still not convinced this is really "fixed" I can tell when my tv is displaying at 1080i, and when I loaded the games, they were still 480p, only completely cropped.

Seriously. If you tv can't do 720p, at least TRY a ps3 on your set and see if it works.

I'll be here, waiting for sony to catch up.....I paid $600 for a machine thats had 10 hours on it since launch....awesome!

What does a DVD look like?  Is it getting upscaled?  PS3 has been able to do that since long before they fixed or supposedly fixed the 720p downscaling problem you complain of.

Whoa whoa, wait.  Run that by me again.  You don't have ANY DVDs!!!!!   :o

I don't think I have met the person who doesn't own a single DVD, and god knows I'd never have expected that person to own a huge HDTV and a PS3.

I stream all of my movies (hd and otherwise) to the ps3/xbox360/etc. I haven't had a physical dvd with a movie on it in years. I will borrow one from someone.

Well I owe you and everyone else an apology as I came in here acting as if I know it all and I apparently do not   :'(

Seems my input was set at 480p/720p/1080i.  While my TV only outputs 1080i/540p, my TV does recognize 720p as an input and up converts it to 1080i.   I knew all that, but I had tried removing 720p from my option and validating that it did convert a 720p to 1080i within the PS3 itself and thought it did.  Apparently when I tried this I had used a 1080i game thinking it was a 720p game which doesn't tell me anything  :o

So basically, after testing it again I can confirm what you describe here.  If I set my inputs as 480p/1080i and a game outputs 720p, it will NOT up convert it to 1080i in the PS3, but rather down convert it to 480p.  If I add 720p to my inputs in the config, then my "TV" is the one doing the upconvert to 1080i, not the PS3.    I thought this is what the fix was supposed to fix, but like you, I'm not seeing those results.

Apologize for the confusion and hope the original poster took my original advice

From what I have read & understand, the xbox360 is capable of 1080i & the ps3 is 1080p.  I'm using a 1080P with my 360 but I do not have a ps3 yet, I was waiting for these to keep dropping in price
I carry both ultimarc & happ items, all brand new & I ship from the united states. My online store is ARCADEEMULATOR.NET, pm if I can help in anyway.
