trouble finding 8mm router bits
« on: January 29, 2008, 12:29:39 pm »
hello,

I am having trouble finding the right bits for my router. I guess because we use MM'ers and not inches here in the Nertherlands, i can't find any usefull bits around here with a 8 mm shank which fits my router.

Need bits for cutting holes through plexi, t-molding and perhaps more which i didnt know were essential for making my cab. The lack of bits kinda stopped the progress on my cab since i need to cut the t-molding slot now.
Any people from Europe here, or perhaps any US people who can help me with some links to the bits i am looking for?
Much appreciated!!
thanks
Michael

I know that Festool, a European company, makes a wide range of bits with 8mm shanks. Or at least they did when I bought my Festool router. It should also be possible to find an 8mm to 1/4-inch collet adapter, if you have access to 1/4-inch shank bits. Again, I think that Festool sells them and I believe that Leigh does also, though I don't know if they sell in Europe.

You might also do a search in this forum. I seem to recall that this topic came up within the last 6 months and several people who live in Europe responded with more specific info.

i cannot find any other posts on this topic unfortunally but perhaps i am not searching for the right words. If you can find it, please let me know.

If nobody has a better idea; I found a online shop in the US who sells 8mm router bits. I need a 1/16 inch slot cutter, which is 1,6 mm, but they only sell either 1.5 or 1.8. Would 1.5mm do for the t-molding?
Could anyone tell me if the shank is included here/do i need anything besides the item in the link? I cant really seem to find out:

I might be thinking about this thread on where to buy a slot-cutting bit in the U.K., though I thought there was another one that was 8mm specific.

have been looking everywhere tonight, but no 8mm bits i need or 8 mm to 1/4 or 1/2 shank converter.

it actually drove me that crazy that i decided to import a router and some 1/4 inch bits from the US. Unfortunally, most online stored dont ship to europe. Saw some good value for money routers on amazon, but none wel eligiable for shipping.  :banghead:

edit: at least i found some 1/4 inch shank routers for sale in Holland, so i guess ill just have to ship the bits in.

What sort of bits are you trying to find? One of the sites I recommended in my first reply sells hundreds of different 8mm shank router bits in The Netherlands. Do they not have what you need?

No i just couldnt find any on a festool/leigh site or retailer. But that means I overlooked, so good news !
I need a 1/16 inch slot cutter (which is 1.6mm) with an 8mm shank
And i need something for flush mounting a happ 3" trackball/happ competition joystick. Not yet sure whichone i need for that. Straight bit? Flush trim bit?

if you could give me the link you found, that would be great. Apparently i am too stupid to find it myself.

Check out Festool. Their bits are somewhat hidden. You have to go to the product pages for the routers and then look at their accessories. Try the 1010 watt router accessories to start. Here are some product IDs that might help:

Arbors for Slot Cutters: 491061, 491062
Slot cutters: 491038 (1.5mm), 491039 (1.8mm)
Flush trim: 491027, 491028
Chamfer: 491024, 491025, 491132, 491133

You can search for these product IDs and they should take you directly to the product page. I didn't see a 1.6mm bit, but 1.5mm should work. The 1.5mm bit will cut the slot .0034" too small, which isn't much. I think the last piece of paper I measured with a micrometer was .0050" or .0100"

I checked the site but overlooked on the bits. thank you very much for the links to the productid's !!

i think it's called a straight trimming bit which i need for flush mounting the trackball mounting plate, i am just not sure whichone that is in dutch on the website. Is thisone the right one?:  491085

if anyone could point me out to the right 'flush mounting bit'  i am all set to go !
thanks again!
