DIY video cable??
« on: January 29, 2008, 12:45:37 am »
Hey all. I have a WG 25k7401 that i am thinking about useing in my mame cab. I was going to use a TV, but i have this monitor laying around, so i think i should just use it :D. Well, onlything is i am trying to find some pictures of some DIY video cables so i can hook it up. The old connector was cut already, so i just have my Blue, green, red, black and white wires. I read the FAQ and the cable hookup that was shown had 6 wires? I have 5. Just would like to see a few schematics or an actual photo of a DIY cable. Thanks all.

OH OH OH OH! I forgot. There are 3 other wires which were also cut, 2 white and 1 red. Larger gauge (about 14) which i do not know what to do with lol. I provided some pics in hope of makeing things easyer. If you need more info, pics, ext, just say the word. I would like to get this going, this is the last step in completing this cab. Thanks everyone.

Video/sync input connector pinouts:
Your red, green, blue, and black wires are the red, green, blue video and ground wires respectively. The white wire is the horizontal or composite sync input.

Now you also have a big problem with those large gauge wires that were cut going from the flyback transformer to the neckboard. That white wire is the "focus" voltage going into the tube socket on the neckboard. The red wire is the "screen" or "G2" voltage going to that gray single pin connector on the neckboard. Somebody cut those for a reason: maybe the flyback is bad and those wires were cut so it would get replaced. Maybe somebody simply didn't know what they were doing and cut the wires  and didn't need to.

Here's what you're going to need to do before powering that monitor up: splice those flyback-to-neckboard cut wires back together again. Here's where it gets tricky. Those wires have high voltages on them so you can't just splice and wrap with electrical tape. The Focus voltage "white" wire has typically 8,000 volts running in it!!!!!!!! The Screen voltage has 400 volts.

Strip the insulation of the white wire ends about 3/8" back. With needle nose pliers, form the bare wire ends into hooks and hook each wire together. Squeeze snug with the needle nose pliers. Now solder the joint. After the freshly soldered joint has cooled (abbout 15 seconds) go ahead and swab the soldered surface with isopropyl rubbing alcohol to remove the solder flux. When dry glob on a bunch of clear silicone glue till the glob is at least a 1/4" thick and extends 1/2" on each side of this splice. Allow to dry 24 hours before powering up the monitor.

Do the same with the screen voltage red wire.

Your picture also shows the vertical yoke connector with nothing plugged in. Should be a connector with green and yellow wires on it goes there.

Thanks for all the great info. The screen and focus were cut by me on accident ( didnt think i was useing monitor ). No problem, i repaired shortly after i posted. My big question was with the horizontal and vertical sync wires. In all of the diagrams i see for a video cable hack, they include both H and V sync. Some i have seen say connect both togeather. I dont have a  V sync wire from what i can see. What am i supposed to do with the V sync pin? Dont connect it?

Also, about the vertical yoke connector....

the vertical yoke, horizontal yoke, and degauss are all disconected (Again, long story, didnt think i was useing monitor lol). Does the polarity matter? All 3 Plugs could go both ways. Dont want to hook them up with wrong polaritys if at all possible :).

Most video games use a composite sync so you will only need one sync wire going to your monitor.  It doesn't matter which way you plug in your degauss coil.  The vertical and horizontal yoke connections do matter but you will not mess anything up by plugging them in backwards.  Your screen will simply be reversed.  If this happens then just flip the appropriate yoke connection around.  The red and blue is horizontal and the yellow and green is vertical.
