TV repair help....
« on: January 27, 2008, 12:05:55 pm »
Howdy folks.

I just picked up a TV for free on craigslist.  Its a 32" toshiba model 32a33 chassis tac 0303.   The fellow told me lightning struck his cable lines and since then the tv will only go into standby mode.  I've been messing with it a little and can see no visual signs of burned components.

I can also jump either of the two relays on the board and the flyback as well as the tube heater and amp will power up, but there is no sound or picture of any kind, and the controlls are dead.

Would anyone here be willing to either help me troubleshoot this or be willing to help me with some schematics?  i've done a google-search but all I've come up with is shady sites charging $25 for a PDF download.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

u might try lifting pins 5 and 6 on the EEprom and then see if it will pwr up . ( it WON'T look good as alignment data will be missing)
if it won't , lift the clock and data lines to the tuner and try to turn on.
dont forget to check the reset line to the uP, make sure the xtal is oscilating and obviously have 5v source .
> lightning can affect bus tied components causing the uP to be nonfuntional <

i don't think i have this print , but will check -

Thanks for the response.  When i get a few minutes to get at the chassis, I'll let you know what I find.

Well, I only got to mess with it for about 2 min. last night.  Hadn't done anything to the boad, just plugged it in and that somehow "let the smoke out" of the chassis and blew a fuse on the board.  Replaced the fuse and now all it does is make a chirping sound.... not good.

Sooo, now it looks like I'll be getting a replacement chassis for it.

Thanks for the help anyways.

Someone told me chirping can mean some caps need replacing.

check the transformer secondaries for a short . then trace to defective prt....horiz/ vert outs most likely followed by audio - or if lucky , just in the smps..
then WHY did it short ?

also sam's photofact # 4896  ( no , don't have that either  :'( )
