WHich encoder with maximus arcade?
« on: January 22, 2008, 01:40:59 pm »
Iv heard a lot of people using maximas arcade having problems with exiting from games. I too had this problem and even with all the so called solutions (jo2key, remapping buttons) i could not exit a game with anything but a keystroke from the assigned button on the keyboard???

I was using an x arcade unit and i think the encoders in them are a little different than say an ipac, because the x arcade encoder is totally configurable and the ipac is only the default mame keyboard buttons. EveybIve ive heard that said they had problems was either using game controllers or an xarcadehaven'tavnt heard of this problem with an ipac user. So my question is, is there anybody here that is using an ipac or any other encoder for that matter and using maximas arcade without a problem? Thanks.

ive tried that also. no worky. I dont need more solutions to get it working with what i currently have, all i want to know is if there is anybody out there using any encoder and having zero problems exiting games without using a program like joy2key or xpadder.

Are you sure the ipac is not configurable? I thought it just had MAME controls as default.

I'm using maximus with an ipac just fine.  :dunno

Yes, out of the box, ipac is basic configured, but with the software available from ultimarc's site, it's completely configurable.

Is your ipac using software from ultimarc or as it came? How do you exit a game in the front end? By just pushing escape? Thanks a bunch.

I have the Hagstrom KE72 keyboard encoder and love it.  It is about 3 times the cost of an IPAC though but the cost was not a big deal for me when you consider I will be keeping the arcade cabinet forever.  Anyway, the KE72 allows for up to 32 keypresses to be mapped to a single button press.   It allows for (Alt), (Ctrl), (Shift) character mappings as well as allowing "delays" between each key as well.  It can be reconfigured "on the fly" to change all of it's mappings as well.

This encoder allows me to exit any emulator or do about anything you can do on a keyboard without having to ever use 3rd party software like joy2key, etc....   Actually when installing an emulator, I never change the emulator's default values at all, I simply create a KE72 configuration mapping file specific to the keys required for that emulator.  When I select a game from the emulator then this configuration file is used to remap my buttons on my control panel for that emulator.   I never have a problem with exiting emulator or anything.

I believe they make a KE32 as well which would be cheaper.  Also I think a new USB version of the encoder is now available whic allows up to 64 characters to be mapped to a single keypress.

** Mapping many characters to a single keypress means you can execute a BAT file at the touch of a button as well as being able to exit from any emulator no matter if the emulator required multiple various keypresses to have it exit (instead of just ESC).
