How do you guys power up & down your home made jamma machines.

I think you have two good points.
I just looked at some pictures of those boards from different places and they did all seem to use just a 12v/5v four pin connector.

Just to be clear. These "units" are JAMMA standard, so you don't *have* to use an AT or ATX supply or a VGA monitor. If you have a fully wired JAMMA cabinet, you just plug the unit to the jamma harness and throw the switch.

If you choose to use VGA and AT power, there are connection points for both. There's even a mini-din for sound. You still need a jamma harness to connect to your controls and such.

Ok, the new cocktail I am building is not wired already so if Im reading this right I could use a happ arcade power supply instead of a atx power supply

Yes, and I would recommend using one.  They are rock solid, cheap, and wire directly into the Jamma harness so you don't have to have a separate power cable running to the board.

The way I've set up my Jamma cabinets is to put a standard plug strip in the cabinet.  Then you plug the monitor, the switching power supply, and the marquee light (in an upright).  To turn the cabinet on or off you either unplug the plugstrip cable coming out of the cabinet or add a power switch to the cabinet.  If you add the switch, then cut the end off the plug strip, cut the end off another power cable, and then twist the neutral wires together in a wire nut, twist the ground wires together in a wire nut, and wire the hot wires into the switch.  That way you can leave the cord plugged in.

If you are going to go with an arcade supply, you should be sure to go back to the second post and read Bob Robert's article. You will need the fuse and line filter. These are built into the computer power supply and you will also get a fan to help circulate air in your cab.

I have found old AT power supplies much cheaper and reliable than used arcade supplies.
