Wood Strength
« on: January 01, 2008, 11:27:42 pm »
I'm planning a custom built racing cabinet (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=74890.0) With a wood frame and fiberglass for some of the large surface areas. For the part of the cabinet that will house the LCD TV and computer I'm wondering if 1x2's will be strong enough for the frame, or if I'll need to go with 2x4's. The LCD doesn't weigh over 40lbs, will 1x2's work?

Thanks,
Kevin

I'd be tempted to use 2x2's for a bit of added strength, but you might be able to get by with 1x2's if the LCD really only weighs 40lbs.

Is there a compelling reason to not use the stronger members?  Why even skirt the chance that it won't be enough?

Thanks, I have to iron out my final design before I decide (Don't want a 32" LCD falling to the floor!)

2x2's will be more than sufficient. You might also go ahead and consider some metal channel or uni-strut.
