TV making popping and sparking noises

hi guys,

got a TV of a family member that has been sitting in a shed for 6 months, i have had it for about a hour sitting in the warm and decided i could probably plug it in ! well i plugged it in with the standby light on and it was fine, came back to my pc and thought whats that popping noise ! and it was the TV so i rushed and unplugged it.... is it bust or ok? do i plug it back in?

would br grateful  of all the help you can give me

I would NOT plug it in again until you get it fixed.   There is probably some bad parts in there somehere, perhaps capacitors, transistors, or the flyback.

the tv would need 24 hours to acclimatise and you would probably have to clean around the anode of the tube and the anode itself-first discharge the tube and use a very light cleaning liquid on a cloth to clean off any dust and moisture,do not spray onto the tube itself
i doubt any damage has been done

grantspain ! long time no see :D

humm well as you will remember im know 16 ! and its happening january to febuary in school im building a moon patrol cab from scratch !

so like i say this TV 'DID' work...... i really don't want to start poking about .... if i leave it plugged in over night with the power off so its earth i presume thats fine, but will i be able to plug it in tomorrow and be able to watch some crappy day time TV?  Do i really need to poke about?

you may just get away with allowing the tv to get to room temperature,see how it goes tomorrow-if you get big blue sparks then you will need to do the cleaning process

BIG BLUE SPARKS !!!!  :hissy:  this isn't the terminator's 4th arrival is it ?!?!?!?!?!?

well the sparking sounded deep with in and i didn't see any and certainly didn't hang around waiting for them ! so hopefully i turned it off before major damage was done... we will see tomorrow

ok guys the TV is as flat as a pancake ! plugged it in and well it go's dong so the power is going into it but the standby light doesn't light and the tv doesn't come on so its nackered ! and objection to its newer brother
