It looks cool but I think ray liotta would have been a beter choice for the joker.

Here is the 6 minute bank heist trailer and it's a lot more awesome than the other trailer:

Ray Liotta is great, and I'm sure he would be great, but it looks like Ledger did a great job.  BTW, is it me or is he paying homage to Jack Nicholson?

Yeah.  The way he talks.  It sounds like he's doing a Nicholson impression.

I still like Christian Bale as the choice for Bats but I'm not sure yet about Heath Ledger as the Joker.  It's really hard to determine the tone for the character for the entire movie based on the trailers.  I tend to think that's a GOOD thing since most trailers show only the best parts of the movie once it hits the theater OR shows footage that doesn't show up until the DVD is released.

I do like the fact that both in 'Batman Begins' and now in the trailers for 'The Dark Knight' there's a level of realism, (I know it's a superhero movie, but still...), that really hasn't been in place for the glut of other superhero movies that have come and gone in the last few years.  I sort of like the smeared, streaky clown makeup that Ledger seems to be wearin'.  It makes it more creepy.

...and the Joker SHOULD be creepy.

I'm anxious to see it.

I agree that Ledger looks like he'll be great in the role.  Besides, isn't Liotta a bit old?  This is supposed to be thier first meeting, after all.

Everyone was bitching about Christain Bale as Batman when it was announced, too.

It appears that Maggie Gylenhaal is the female lead this time too. A much improved choice over Ms. Cruise.

Am I the only person that found Maggie Gylenhaal strangely attractive in Stranger Than Fiction? Tattoos and all, I thought she was hot - and tattoos are a MAJOR turn off normally for me.

Initially I was concerned about Ledger being cast as the Joker -  but I ain't no more.  Whether or not he's paying homage to Jack, he obviously has got the part nailed down.   There were times with that laugh of his that I also felt he was playing some degree of homage to Ceaser Romero's Joker as well.

Even though the Adam West version is pure silly, I still think Romero had a great take on the character....and the laugh - for the time period - was damn near perfect (edit: for my money, no matter how good the guy might look in makeup, if he can't give you that truly maniacal (sp?) laugh, it won't work).

So cut to 2008 - they can't  use smilin' Jack...so they went out and tapped this virtual unknown to play a monster role....and if these trailers are ANY indication, this is going to be one hell of a ride.  Ledger's Joker looks and sounds marvelous given the fact that this is Batman, the early years.  Dark and realistic....and just incredible.

I know it could tank....but with Ledger in and Bale back behind the cowl again, my belief is that THIS is the big screen version of this battle that long time fans have been waiting years for.

Yeah . . . it's gonna be good.  All the important cast is back.  Same director (the director of Memento, no less).  I mean, I suppose you never know.  Sam Raimi managed to make a travesty out of Spiderman 3 after doing brilliant work on the first two.  But I expect good things here.

You'll like it.  Really gritty.  I still think the first Tim Burton one is the best -- kind of in the same way I think Super Mario 64 is the greatest 3D platform/adventure game ever made.  Batman Begins might be objectively better than the first Tim Burton Batman, but Burton's paved the way for it.  It wouldn't exist without Burtons, and neither would any of the Spidermans, Hellboy, X-Men, etc.

And so on . . .

Nice trailer, Seriously the 60's show was so gay, Although I really did like ceaser Romero's joker.   Batgirl looked smokin in her little outfit But It looked like she had a massive alien head when she took her cowl off.

Well it's a same the man is dead and I sincerely mean that, but the movie, as well as his final performance looks like crap to me.  I don't think filming is done yet and seeing how it's impossible to do a re-write (writers strike) this film might get canned indefinately.  Imho this could only be a good thing as this film looks to be crap much like batman begins was crap.

I'm sick and tired of writers/directors/ect  "re-imagining" batman characters.  Let me put it this way... the ONLY person who can get away with that crap is tim burton, mainly because he is insainely talented.  Every batman film except 1 and 2, which he did, has been crap.  The joker wears purple and is a clown... he's not some emo crow wanna-be.  The fact that such a dark and sinister character goes around in cheery outfits throwing about bad puns is what makes him interesting and compelling.  Likewise, the contrast is what makes him scary.  It looks like they are just trying too hard to give the old clown an edge, which he already had, it just requires good acting ability to portray it.

I find it tragically ironic that ledger commited suicide portraying a character that looks like the crow at 28 while Brandon lee accidentally killed himself during the "suicide scene" on the set of the crow on his 28th birthday in full "clown" makeup.

Probably don't need to.

From NY Post:
"He recently wrapped filming on 'The Dark Knight,' the sequel to 'Batman Begins,' in which he plays the villainous Joker."

Doh, didn't realize he was supposed to be in the next film as well.

Casto, have you ever read a Batman comic? I mean, since the 1970's?

Batman Begins was closer to the modern Batman than anything by Burton.

Sorry to rain on your Burton love-fest but the 1989 Batman simply doesn't stand the test of time.  It was great when it was released but by today's standards, seems as campy as the 60's TV series.

It had been done... just not that well and with that budget.  There were a few Marvel adaptations in the 80s that just didn't work out because of small budgets and the talent that comes with it.  The early 80s show about The Hulk was a similar dark treatment of a comic book character and was way before Burton's first Batman movie.

Quote from: Kevin Smith
He [Tim Burton] said "Anybody who knows me knows I would never read a comic book. And I certainly would never read anything written by Kevin Smith." Which to me, explains Batman.

Casto, have you ever read a Batman comic? I mean, since the 1970's?

Batman Begins was closer to the modern Batman than anything by Burton.

yeah im with Sir Auros on this one.....seems like you watched the old "bam!" and "biff!" batman one too many times and thought "oh gee, the joker is supposed to be a laughing retard all the time and never really accomplish anything".  read this http://stars.ign.com/articles/841/841564p1.html from ign on the many faces of the joker.  as you can see, the joker originally started out as an insane murderer that was more about killing and destruction than throwing cards at people.

tim burtons' portrayal of the joker was indeed great and i loved the first two films to death....and they still are great.  burton's adaptation of the joker took the original maniacal version of the joker and combined it with the lunatic laughing boy of the old batman tv show and jack nicholason's acting is what you got.  it was great.

that being said, heath ledgers joker is much closer to the original intent of what the joker was supposed to be.  a messed up dude, that was more like a serial killer than a guy that wants to take over gotham city by filling up clown balloons with gas.  and i always thought the actual joker making "chemical accident" was done a little campy.  im supposed to believe (yes i know its a comic book movie, but bear with me) that a guy falls into acid and comes out with perfect clown makeup (a.k.a. tim burtons joker).  heath ledger's look is much more believeable with the scarring and makeup done sloppily, clothes strewn together to kinda resemble a clown outfit.  IMO, an insane serial killer isnt going to take the time to walk down to the local taylor to get measured for a purple suit.  the makeup will be shoddy and he will look nasty and dirty.

obviously im a fan of batman begins as well, as the scarecrow was also made much more believable.  im so glad they didnt make him look like a wizard of oz scarecrow adaptation....although im guessing howard wouldve liked that better.  :dunno  sheesh!

im with shmokes on this one. what burton did with batman just hadnt been done before. batman begins is great too, but definitely owes its existence to the first..

It had been done... just not that well and with that budget.  There were a few Marvel adaptations in the 80s that just didn't work out because of small budgets and the talent that comes with it.  The early 80s show about The Hulk was a similar dark treatment of a comic book character and was way before Burton's first Batman movie.

you mean that show with matrick duffy ('s leg) ?

"mr magee, dont make me angry!"

yep,  pretty dark and gothic memories for me there...

That was Bill Bixby, not Patrick Duffy.  It was a dark show for sure.  Every week something crappy happened to that guy.  The whole concept was that becoming the Hulk was a burden - something he had to hide and was desperate to cure before someone was killed.  It was a lot more Jekyll and Hyde than it was 70s boomcrashpow superhero.

I always get a kick out of people vicariously giving Batman Returns great loads of respect solely on the grounds that it was made by the visionary who made the original.  Batman was a masterpiece that basically created a genre.  It was fantastic.  It was great.  The sequel is barely good.  Penguin's henchmen are only the slightest, teeniest, tiniest bit better than the roller-blading, glowstick-wearing retards that Schumacher gave us later on.  The only thing stupider than Penguin being able to remotely control the Batmobile's mechanical functions by sticking a little device to the car was when Batman punched a hole through the undercarriage of his car in order to pull it off.  Dumb.  And do we need three villains in a movie?  No.  We do not.

Although I loved Batman Returns, I have to whole-heartedly agree with your assessment.
