Type of Solder to use...

What's the best type of solder to use when resoldering joints and caps on a monitor, or on the other components in the cab in general?

there are so many types but this is the type i tend to use as its an all rounder

Electronic with rosin core and 60/40 mix of tin/lead.

Don't use that unleaded crap and never use 'plumbing' type or acid core.

kester does a fine job .. though, a bit pricey      so, watch for sale pricing...
a cheaper alternative is tenma brand ( mcm electronics 800 543-4330 ) it is a good gen purpose solder.

Also try to get it pretty thin if you are working on a PCB.  It makes it easier to control the amount and exact applied location of the solder.  I'd go with something between a 0.020" and 0.032".

Is brand really all that big of an issue? It's 60/40. It's got Rosin. What else is there?

It's not like I buy all sorts of solder, but I've never really noticed a difference from the overpriced stuff at Rat Shack, to the stuff you get from MCM.

brand names can be of significance   i.e. yugo vs lamborgini   
in solder , rosin formulation and tin/lead ratios cause performance to vary from one brand to another .
"el cheapo" solder and a 128+ pin surface mount ic is not a good combination ...

Cars compared to solder.... It's like grapes to nuts. 

60/40 ratio is supposed to be 60/40. Are variances so great that it's possible to get 70/30 or 50/50 on solder spec'd as 60/40?

Isn't rosin just an acid they get from pine trees? Or is there more to it than that?
