Insain in the Mamebrain FINISHED mame cab pics
« on: November 10, 2007, 11:31:57 am »
Ok so i guess im new to THIS forum, but ive been freqenting a few others, and looking on here but never posting I know how wrong that was.. but it seemed that all the answers were being given pretty nice!

I have to give a MASSIVE thanks to Chris from OZSTICK.. seriously if your ever going to buy stuff or you need advice seek him out you wont get better advice anywhere , super friendly, patient and a generally great guy to deal with..

once again thanks to all who helped!

Enjoy guys.

Phew what a long project that consumed my time.. ALL my time!

Ok so, I finally got around to posting some photo's.

I have to thank all you guys for giving me adivce on the front end.. Although I feel like I was doing it all alone ( as in making the thing! ) I

Ok so the 1st few are simply of my control panel..

I think its all pretty self explanitory.. :
The only thing that annoyed me is I cant get a great photo with the LED lights going! But i did my best !

Im very pleased with how the project turned out.. I would like to hear your comments :

Just before the buttons went in : Some photos dont show the level of quality of the paint work : but in this photo you can see from the reflection of the table cloth, its like a car !

Some of the features of my Mame Unit are :

Fully sorted 3000 + ROMs in 18 Seperate directories, all uniquely skinned.

Each of the scrolling text is unique to the skin also also the background music, in theme with the genre.

Coin doors wired up to accept 20 cents for credits.
( I heard someone ask how to simulate a real doin drop sound.. just do what I did, and simulate the real thing, have a box FULL of coins! when it drops in thats what it sounds like "clink"

Pinball flippers and working Authntic plunger. In fact the plugher is also calibrated to only work on a pressure system, eg : how far you pull it back is how hard it fires. ( I think most people do this )

Street FIghter 2 Layout, with Neo Geo button config, and all buttons remapped to work in this config

Act Labs light gun, Modified Paint and altered the trigger button to be smoother.

Flight Stick, I also rewired the trigger button on the Joystick to work in with the games and the i-pac.

Jukebox 10,000+ songs

Light Gun :

Light gun Holster  and Gun in action .

Pinball :

I thought I would also put in some of the construction pics ( only a few )
I do have plenty of the build process but by now I think we have seen how a cab gets done !

And for youki and hawkxp, they wanted to see some of the work on the front end :

One thing I didnt include in the phot'os, the scrolling text down the botton reads all differnt things for each game genre. I also edited in photoshop the buttons and added new button configs, a plungers for pinball a lightgun icon for the gun games, The jukebox ect... so its not just words !

When you 1st turn it on you have this as your Main menu :

1980s Classics :

Action :

Adventure :

Arcade Classics :

Beat 'em Ups :

Bizarre:

Fighting :

Military:

NeoGeo:

Old school :

Platform games :

Pinball :

Puzzle :

Racing:

Scrolling Shooters:

Run and Gun shooters:

Lightgun Games :

Sports :

Street Fighter 2 Series.
For those interested, I had an old SF2 Arcade machine that died.. I sadsly miss that old cab! Hence this project was born.. I always LOVED SF2, I was only 13 when it was relesed and I couldnt get enough of it.. I cannot beleive now I have every version ever made, so I dedicated an entire sub Dir to it !

Mame Jukebox, If you look close, i photoshopped up a mame logo into the Jukebox.. Well I like it :)

Well guys thats about it.. I dont think I can be stuffed uploading anymore . I enjoyed this project alot..
If anyone wants more photo's of certain things.. or more details.. Juyst ask in here.. I will look over for your comments in the next few days..

many thanks to everyone. !

ENjoy.. and yes Im INSAIN IN the MAME Brain!

Very very very nice.  Wrong forum, but very nice.   ;)

I like how you sorted everything - that seems to be my biggest sticking point as far as making my cab and gamelist managable...

Awesome job!!

Your machine looks great!!!!  How come no trackball or spinner? How did you do that pinball machine plunger? What frontend did you use? It looks awesome.

Superb looking cabinet. Very nice quality of finishing there. Well Done.

I'd be very interested to hear exactly how you built your pinball plunger system and how it detects how far back it has been pulled and how it then sends that information to the PC.

Ok so a few questions.. I didnt realise I had put it in the wrong section! as you can see only 4 posts for THIS forum!

( should have warned me fred! heheh )

Ok so the front end is ATOMIC FE.. simply one o fthe most powerful front ends ive used.

The pinball plunger is simple, its a dedicated pinball plunger system....... and it uses a microswtich that is wired in reverse..

Basically a standard micro switch is closed until the circut is active then you have the curcut closed for a split second and that registers your movement... either a punch, or a fire, or a quick left movement of the joystick.

If you wire it in reverse, the circut is open all the time until the level is pulled back.
I use Pinmame and Vpinball the way these work is the longer you hold down the Enter button, the further back your plunger goes in Virtual time. .. for arguments sake a .300 milsecond would only register is as a small movement of the plunger an d be a soft shot.. or.. you can hold it down for 1.5 seconds and be a full shot.

All i did was make it so that the microswitch was on all the time until the circut was broken then its simply a case of far far back you pull it dictates how long the curcut it open for ( or as the pc thinks.. how long you hole the enter button down for ) or whatever button you map it.

So its not QUITE.. a pressure system as in phyisically how fast the plunger goes back in.. but it does register as a genuine plunger would if you only pull it back a small amount it only registers a small movevemt..

-----

On a side note.. one funny story, the light gun from actlabs..for those who dont know doesnt come looking like that, I modified it stripping it back, painting it gun metal black , clear coating it.. and adding the computer engraved Glock .9mm.. for hat authentic look and feel.....

the 1st place i went to refused to engrave it thinking I might rob a bank with it.......

the 2nd place i went to refused to do it in computer cut but would do it free hand and make it look " good but not professional "  I told him to get stuffed!

I found a 3rd place and I basically lied to the guy and said " this is an award we are giving a memeber of our gun club for getting a very nice scal model glock 9 mm ! LOL he was ok with that !

rob a bank..... please i just want to play violent shooting style video games :)

 :dizzy: :tool:

also another kool feature I didnt add in.. is ive downloaded the complete mame cheat dat file, and i have a hidden switch under the control panel and i can acess it through there.

ok other questions.. why no trackball or spinner?

simple....... I was true to what I wanted to build for myself, I love having freinds over drinking a few and having BBQ's and movie nights.. and I also love fighting games....

well..... I have a broad palete of games I like.. but in my original brief I wanted simply a fighting style, maching that played pinball games but wasnt a dedicated pinball cab.. I wanted to play alot of scrolling shootings... hence the flightstick and dual fire buttons so left / right hand combination.. ( and yes I realise its only a right handed flightstick, but im right handed! It can be held comfortably left handed for the other option.

I love Mortal kombat series, SF2 series in clunding marvel games, all scrolling shooters, beat em ups like simpsons, final fight , tmnt ect... Fatal furies...... all those classics.

Early on I didnt want a frankepanel, or a jack of all trades style panel.. i wanted something that I played alot and I could enjoy with friends, a trackball for the few trackball games like golden tee seemed pointless ( albeti i have all the goldenteew's in the sports catagory! you can use the mouse if you REALLY want to play it!

as for the spinner, again, it came down to personal shoice, i opted for a nice multi purpose flight stick, even place space invaders, or pacman with it is cool! its not just for afterburner! LOL   :laugh2:
As i said, ive also mapped the finger trigger button in the joystick to the ipac, so there is one hand operation for those games that were just left right, shoot.. its very cool

so there you go :) I also havent seen any cabs with volume controls built in.. sure you can acess it through mame control keys, but for the jukebox its nice.

I also custom built the speaker grill you see, and the speakers are mounter behine that ( which would be obvious!

I also made the marquee - which does have twin fluencesnt lights.. I made that completely dark..  no that doesnt make sense..
no light seeps out of the marquee, its completly enclosed within the marquee itself.

As for the Frontend.. yes Atomic FE is my choice, its simple, its good, it has the abilty to dispaly like mala, the games, in PNG or video format.. but i couldnt be bother downloading them all! why see a pic of the game when you can just play it!

Sorting the games was a nightmare.. ask "arcadefever" he knows it took my a solid 4 weeks!!! it was insain.. i had to play every indiviual ghame, work out where it went, put it into a sub folder, and boot that into atomic.. phfft! it was worth it in the end.

One thing i didnt show was the great loading video its got lightning and sort of etches the work mame into the screen.. it can be downloaded fro anywher ei think..

I also altered the windows boot screen, to have a mame system loading skin..
again these are all ready for download.

Thanks for the props peeps..... i will try to give out more advice, for others and be a little more active..

So TMNT is a "Classic" now? Damn you're making me feel old.

I think the trackball question was referring to how you plan on playing Centipede,  and Tempest without a spinner, etc. But those games are probably too ancient right?
 ;D

Nice dedication...especially on the sorting. When you get a chance you should post the final sort here for anyone wishing to adopt your method without the four-day commitment. It's quite brilliant!

Props

Nice work! I love your layout in AtomicFE. How's the top middle joystick work out for you? It looks a bit close to the cabinet when moving it forward...

Vor][ex, first up, awesome build! I like the multiple game listings with custom themes... looks good.

If you dealt with OzStick, would that make you a fellow Aussie? Where are you from?

You're missing out on part of the pinball experience without the ability to nudge.  I didn't see any nudge buttons on your CP.

I can relate to spending hours setting up the software.  I'm deep in the middle of that right now on my current project... and I'm only dealing with about 100 roms and 50 or so tables.

Looks great.

I think your cabinet is great! The control panel is very nicely laid out, and it is kind of unique they way you did the admin buttons.

I only have one gripe with you machine - I really think you sold yourself short by using nintendo coin mechs. It totally does not fit with the theme of the machine.
