mame32 sound trouble

hello all

i'm having a problem with sound lvls in mame32...(various versions)
the sound in mame is very quiet (except for a couple games like gauntlet)
my soundcard (sblive) is working, as windows sounds and mp3s etc play at
volume.
i've tried to search this forum, but to no avail.
is mame's sound quieter by design?

any helpful ideas/solutions would be greatly appreciated!
