Any online woodcutting services?
« on: October 28, 2007, 03:11:35 pm »
I'm not positive this is the right place to ask, so please move this if it isn't.

I love building things, and I have a particular addiction to things like arcade cabinets. Unfortunately, I recently ended up in a living situation that makes it impossible to do anything more than some very basic woodworking (living in a dorm, there's no wood shop or similar facility available).

This hasn't completely cut me off - I can still assemble things and do some very basic work - most recently by purchasing a kit from mameroom.com (I'll probably be posting more on that later). And I'm still quite active when it comes to the design level of things - I spend quite a bit of my free time coming up with new designs for various ideas using CAD software. The trouble is, I have no way of ever building most of these things.

That's why I'm posting this - I'm wondering if anyone knows of any online companies that can take orders and cut raw material based on CAD drawings I provide.  I've found several companies doing this sort of thing, but most of them are setup for large-scale production, focusing on machining techniques suited to small/complex metal/plastic objects - in turn, the cost of something simple like a single 12"x10"x3/4" piece of plywood with 1" rounded corners ends up costing $350+.

So, does anyone know of such a service suited to doing work on such a level? Or, if anyone happens to know of someplace in the central Florida area (I've seen nothing so far, but I guess it doesn't hurt to ask). Not expecting to find much, but I would be grateful if anyone knows of anything like what I'm looking for.

Most Internet lumber dealers will cut wood to approximate size; they have to if they way UPS to accept it. Nobody that I know does this with plywood, however. There are also places, like this that rent shop space on an hourly basis where you could do the work yourself with their tools.

Your best bet, however, might be to look for a local woodworking club. I suspect you could find a hobbyist woodworker who might be willing to help you out for a reasonable price. Since you're into CAD, another approach might be to contact ShopBot and see if there's anyone in your area that owns one of their CNC routers. If you bring them files that are "ready to run" they might be willing to throw a sheet of plywood on their machine, run the program, and give you the results for a reasonable price. You might be looking for a small cabinet shop that owns a machine but doesn't have it busy 100% of the time. If they can do the setup for your stuff quickly and go back to something else, it's pure profit for them.

I have a shop full of woodworking tools. I am located in central North Carolina about a days drive from central Fla. I will be glad to help if possible.
Part of my equipment is a CNC router driven with Bobcad software used to design and cut plywood, natural lumber and MDF.
My equipment allows me to cut about any part  needed.
I don't use pm but you are welcome to send an email.
PS I am a fulltime professional woodworker and use CAD drawings for all my work.

Mame Room has a CNC milling service, but it's still going to end up costing you quite a bit (not as much as you mentioned though):

I've never had anything cut by them, but I've heard good things.
