:o WOW talk about fast reflexes.  He just taps the flipper button for a microsecond.

Which, of course, requires a couple of things... knowing the exact depth of the leaf switch inside... and having absolutely perfectly working flippers.  Even a little slop in the flipper bushing or an out of alignment leaf and that just isn't going to work.

Really? I was figuring this was possible for the video because there was ample slop/lag in the coil and plunger mechanism. In pretty much every pin I have ever played, even a simple quick tap results in a full engagement of the coil.

Until they finally showed his right hand tapping the button, I was assuming he was nudging to pass the ball.

If the bushing is cracked you're going to get more sideways movement of the flipper post than you are clean rotation... and that will make the action too inconsistent to do what he's doing.  I'm talking about those microsecond taps when I say this, not a full activation.  You can clearly see that he's not even getting a quarter of an full extension on a good pass.  That's how scary fast he's doing it.

Especially on the jungle lord.  That game would have two leafs on each button - one for the upper, one for the lower.  On the Sys7s you can contol the upper and lower flippers independently if you master the leaf depth, but what this guy is doing is taking it to a whole new level of detail.  Notice the upper flippers don't move at all when he does it right.

The Tap Pass is described on page three first column of the pdf file.  The guy in the vid was doing that and the lane pass described just underneath the tap pass.  Cool find Chad.

I love some of the really obvious stuff...

"play when well rested"
"wear comfortable clothing"
"put your weight on one leg or two"

The first thing that pops into my mind when reading things like that is "It's a ---smurfing--- GAME, people! Relax a little!"  ;D

They make it sound like it is a strenuous sport or something.

Well, I think this guide is geared more towards competitions, but still...

Getting further into it, my best techniques are definitely the bounce and the live trap... when I'm playing well (for me) I can combine the speed pass and live trap but usually try to pass with either a bounce or a ramp pass.  When I'm not having a strong ball the speed pass/live trap combo ends up with either a drain because I mis-time it or I do it too hard and it bounces up to the outlane.  I think I need to work on these microtap passes next.  Finding a ramp pass on an unfamiliar game takes too long.

How many medals do you have?

I won a gold medal in the '96 Olympics with a broken freakin' neck.

Where are your gold medals?

I have a 3rd place chess tournament trophy from HS.  Technically not a medal but still an award.  What i was getting at was you mentioned competitions so i figured youd been in a few.

Did you really compete in the '96 Olympics?

Ah.  I have competed in small local pinball stuff.  I never come close to winning.  Some of the best (including a guy who may be the best) pin players in the world are in my area so I am a total jobber in competitions here.  That is why they win and I'm here reading documents on how to be better.

I won the freestyle wrestling gold medal at the Atlanta Olympics.  I then went on to win the WWF and WCW world titles... I just lost the TNA World Heavyweight Championship to Sting a week or so ago.

I looked you up on wikipedia and was actually surprised noone from here has ever set up an entry for the world's most active forum member. Someone needs to rectify that. ;)

Heh.  Have you only been to a small handful, then?  There are forums where I'd be in 500th place in post count.

Thats horrible though i guess you can at least see how they get the best scores.  Exactly which pin is used for the competitions?  You mentioned its hard to find a ramp pass on an unfamiliar field so would that mean the organizers only use one or two pins or would they switch it around to keep people on their toes?

So you are kurt angle?

It's actually really cool to get to watch all these guys play on a regular basis.  I watched one guy play Fathom for a half hour last year and damn if I didn't learn more in that half hour than I would have from hundreds of hours of practicing myself.  I got so much out of it I bought my own Fathom this year.

In order to use mostly ramp passes you have to know where they all are AND be able to hit them effectively on any game that may be used.  A lot of these small competitions are at guys' houses with really big collections, meaning the games used could be any from a really random pool.  They'll decide which ones 5 minutes beforehand and if you don't happen to know those machines you end up having to learn the ramp passes in competition.  Not a good way to do it.

So you are kurt angle?

Seemed like the right response to "how many medals do you have".
