DMESS version higher than 0.89?
« on: October 24, 2007, 09:15:34 am »
I'm building a cocktail cab that will run off a very small fanless 1GHz ITX PC (4GB Flash as HDD) on an LCD Monitor. I've decided to run it using DOS and up to now have a very nice working Game Launcher frontended system running MAME 0.55 and a select few arcade games (Thanks to Spystyles great MAME boot CD).

I would however like to create some menus for NES, SNES, Megadrive, Master system and a few other consoles as a bonus. I've found that most DOS emus are lacking when compared to Windows emus. I decided to try MESS 0.89 (Which is the last version I could find on the official page). And through a bit of configuring in Game Launcher have managed to get it running with many of the systems I want to emulate. The problem is MESS 0.89 isn't quite as compatible as i'd like it to be (NES sound is a bit odd for example, especially the noise when Mario jumps). Feature wise its spot on though (Especially since its buttons are the same as MAME by default).

I have tried to get ADVMESS working as that version is up to 0.102 I have had some success, but can't seem to get the screenmodes working on my LCD monitor (Scanlines, for example just cause my screen to say "Out of range" no matter what options I try whereas in DMESS scanlines are no probs). And screen tearing is a problem even with vsync on. It's also quite a bit advanced for my tiny brain (All those screen config modes!!). I can appreciate its a great version for folks that have a REAL arcade monitor though.

I'm wondering if a newer version of DMESS exists that might have some of the niggles of 0.89 ironed out? If not official then unofficial. Or even a way to compile from an older source to newer files?

I know DMAME went up to 0.100 so I figure there must be a 0.100 DMESS somewhere or a way to create it, I just can't find it  :-[

Any advice or help would be appreciated  :)
