Donkey Kong girders are pink, doesn't look right
« on: October 20, 2007, 10:37:38 am »
I noticed in the most recent mame versions that the girders are a pink color.  They used to be more red.  I compared the color to an authentic donkey kong and it doesn't match at all.

Anybody know why they changed it?  It seems to me that it was fine before they changed it.

Here is a link to a thread on MameWorld about the Donkey Kong colors.    There were many clones that differed from the original.  Some say that the original should be pink.

I always thought the girders had a pink'ish hue to them, at least moreso than red.  If I play DK in Mame32, or earlier builds, the girders are red (it doesn't look right to me  :dunno ).  But it runs better.  The only problem, is that sound reproduction isn't 100%, given the samples that I'm using.  The "mario running" sound is supposed to vary in note and pitch every few steps, and for whatever reason, in MAME32, it's the same "note" every time he takes a step.  Kind of disappointing.  When I play DK in later versions, like mame .119 or .120, the colors look more correct to me (pink'ish girders), but it doesn't run as well.

Now...All of the above applies to when I play on an LCD monitor.

In building my cocktail cabinet, I tested out MAME32 for the first time tonight, on my CRT computer monitor (19").  Low and behold, the colors look correct!  So I'm wondering if maybe it's moreso an issue with my LCD monitor in conjunction with MAME32 (or whatever build I'm using at the time) than the actual software.  Just a thought!

update:

So I tested DK on Mame32 on a CRT monitor (as opposed to the usual LCD monitor I use normally), and the girders were a more accurate color (in my opinion).

I threw in some subtle scan lines, and it was just like the real deal.  I look forward to getting my cocktail built...
