For those that haven't been following Phil Stroffolino's new emulator, MJOLNIR:

Version .3 is now out:  http://machna.com/games/index.html

This emulator makes the Namco System 21 and 22 roms play at an acceptable speed.  Seems Starblade and Prop Cycle have been the focus in the early going with both playable.  Sounds like drivers for the other roms will be improved after Starblade is perfected. :applaud:

Now if there was only a new release of the M2 emulator. :angel:

So... He mentions submitting a driver to MAME... Is this going to be part of MAME then? or should we setup this as a separate emu, like Model2?

From what I gather, he will continue to have a separate emulator because it will be too slow in Mame.  Some comments by R. Belmont and A. Giles on mameworld sounds like some changes to Mame might make those games play fast enough, but who knows how long that will take.

Since you like Ridge Racer you could try out viva nonno.  It does a pretty good job emulating it.

Actually, according to the readme file, Ridge Racer is not supported.  Having said that, I've found that vivanonno does a GREAT job of emulating Ridge Racer 2 and Rave Racer.  In fact, I just picked up one of those clearance Nascar steering wheels at Target, and that makes it even better. 

I'm looking forward to seeing how Mjolnir compares once those games are running on it, because it does a great job with Prop Cycle.  (I can't get Starblade to work...it keeps telling me I have a romz problem, even though the game runs (albeit slowly) on Mame with the romz I have...go figure).

Nope, they are totally different.

Well, I don't think that's *ENTIRELY* accurate.  IIRC, they are the same roms, but they have different file names.  I believe I had to go in and just rename the MAME roms to correspond to what vivanonno was looking for (which I think was in the readme file, or one of the other files that comes with vivanonno).  So unless I'm remembering it incorrectly, you just need to take the time to rename the ones it sounds like you already have.

Seems like an awful lot of work when the vivanonno roms are easy to find.  Maybe not.  Easy enough to change the extension to "bin" with one command and then hand rename several to put a dash in the appropriate spot.  On the other hand, there's only two roms to download, taking a couple of minutes.

No, you're right, it was more work than it needed to be.  But my point was just that you *CAN* use the MAME roms if that's what you have.

On a similar topic, and bringing the discussion back to Mjolnir, does anyone know if there's something I need besides the MAME roms to play Starblade?  Seems like that's all you'd need, since Mjolnir is a MAME derivative, but I can't get it to work.  I get the dos box popping up, but it closes so quickly that I can't read it to see what the error is!

Yeah, that did it.  Thanks!

With that, I can say that, with Mjolnir, both Starblade and Propcycle work very smoothly on my old P4 1.8 gHz Dell.  Far better than under MAME .119: no stuttering, no choppiness, nothing.  The emulator's looking great so far!
