License plates as carry-on.
« on: October 13, 2007, 02:47:39 am »
Anyone know if I can take license plates on a plane? I am considering buying a car that is 500 miles away and would be taking license plates with me. Would they be a problem in my carry-on luggage?

I can't seem to find a satisfactory answer to this question.

Never mind, I came to my senses and decided not to buy the car.

you could just tie a sting from on of the top holes to the other, wear it around your neck and claim it a religious garment...

Or carry it with a bottle of water on. They will be so distracted with the dangerous water that they will overlook the plate....

FYI INAL so these actions are really not recommended

doesnt the car come with number plates? and whats the point of having them if you could legally just put on any old plates onto any old car?

all that aside, just have them in the regular luggage rather than carry on. problem solved...

A car doesn't get a single plate for its lifetime here.  That's not how it works.

oh, im probably missing something. a car CAN have the same plates here forever. now i think about it i guess paige was figuring on paying for the registration in his home state, collecting the plates and then flying over to the other state and affixing them because it didnt have rego there...

i guess i never paid that question much heed before because id be too scared to buy a car, unregistered in another state. id be too scared of something dodgy going on. the nearest i came to that is paying for a car when i was in vancouver that was 30 minutes away by train, going to the insurance office and picking up the plates and going back to pick it up. that was scary enough for me because the state i come from the vehicle HAS to be inspected before they give you plates...

That depends on where you live chad.   In CA,  the plates go with the car when you sell it.  Here in ID,  you keep the plates to stick on other vehicles.

Its a state issue....in WA the plates go with the car, UNLESS they're vanity plates, then you can opt to keep them.  Also, plates are retired and reissued every X number of years (10?), again unless they're personalized etc.

As for flying with them in carry on, I don't see any reason why it would be an issue.  I would think that the tsa would have more of an issue with a can of playdoh with a usb memory stick stuck in it...

In my particular case I WAS going to do what I usually do, which is insure the vehicle before I get there, stick the plates on it that I was going to be transferring onto it, and then drive it back with those on it, and register it when I got back.

But, I didn't buy the car, so it is a moot point.

I'm pretty sure the plates don't have to go with the car in CA, though... I was just talking to someone in CA recently who had vanity plates he said he's had for like 20 years.
