Ms Pac on the fritz - monitor problem most likely?
« on: October 12, 2007, 01:04:20 am »
I'm back!

Scene: Ms. Pac board sent to Peter H in NH for repair.  Multiple issues repaired and tested for 24 hour burn in process.  Cabinet has been out of commission for 2 years and moved from one house to another (but worked at one time).

Put newly fixed gameboard in cabinet today and fired it up.  After waiting for game post (which was illegible) this is the screen I see.

Tests: my coin door doesn't seem to be working at all, no lights or signal when depressing coin drop.  So, pressed the test coin button inside right of cabinet to acknowledge credit.  Then tested game.  Sounded just fine, seemed to be working just fine, but screen was still garbage.  Tried tweaking the h-shift and v-shift, etc but to no avail.

Thoughts??  I have no way to confirm the monitor itself is any good since I have no other boards.  And i have no other monitors to test the board with.  suck!

??

Do you see any movement/change on the screen when you try to play blind or when it switches from attract to play mode ? If so I'd say this is a sync problem, probably on the monitor. Also check the video wiring, esp. sync wire from the PCB to the monitor.

Are you talking about the monitor board or system board?

Perhaps someone can recommend a good place to buy either a brand new or good condition 19" replacement monitor?  Thanks!

to me it looks like a colour ram problem but you said this is a newly repaired board, did you see the board working?
it could be a sinc problem but personally i don't think so
another problem may be power related, you will need to get a multimeter out and test voltages
when was this repaired, what was the original fault and what did the repair guy say the problem was?

Here's what was quoted as being repaired:

Bad 2114 ram chip.  Bad 74LS157 chip on the vram card.  Bad 3M sound prom causing crackles in the sound.  Broken 104 capacitor near the crystal.  Socket repair needed at the vram (broken tab).  It is 100% right now.

I also didn't mention it's a 19K4906 monitor which I believe is acceptable for this game.

And when I was playing blind I could sort of make out from time to time a character moving and such, mostly because I knew where my character was and could somewhat see some movement, but not well enough that anyone could actually tell what game it was if they didn't know.

*** New idea ***
anyone in the Kansas City area have a Working Pac or cabinet I can bring my board over and test it out in?  That would help immensely!

After a few emails from gamers I did the basics in checking the board itself and found the vram chip was not properly seated.  Alas, it works now!  Shame on me for not looking more closely at it!  (in my defense it had a cable tie securing it to the board, but apparently not secure enough!)

Thank you all for your replies.

Glad you got it working. I use Pete for my repairs too - always been very happy with his work.

Anyways, you got pics of the cab bro? Feel free to share. ;D
