MAME Dial without a mouse
« on: October 09, 2007, 09:34:47 pm »
Is there a way to use the Dial control in MAME without using a mouse or the X-Axis?  One of my favorite games is Forgotten Worlds and I have no dial or spinner on my control panel. I used to use the Control panel buttons to move the dial but that seems to no longer work in the latest version of MAME. Any ideas??  Thanks

Love that game.

Buttons work for me, so I'll need more info to help.

What are your "Control panel buttons" to mame: keyboard or joystick?  Encoder, hack, or software (such as joy2key)?  Do the other buttons, such as can you move and shoot?

Did you remap before?  How about this time?  What version did you change from, and was the new installed into a new folder, or same?

If you remapped, are you using a ctrlr file to remap, or did you just use mame's in game remapping (aka cfg/cfg files)?

I'll bet it's either joy2key software, a need to remap, or both.

Control Panel Buttons are running joystick from a GP-Wiz encoder USB version. I changed from a mame version .80 to 119. WOW!!  I know what a jump... When I first started to play this game the dial was set to joystick x-axis. So when I moved my character he would also spin around. Once I turned the dial off I could control the player fine but how to control the dial with buttons? Mame won't let me set the dial setting to a button??

Did you remap in side mame?

Start a game, tab, "Input (general)", enter, "player 1", "dial inc", enter, button you want mapped, (wait until mame excepts it), repeat for "dial dec" and then repeat for player 2 (if needed).

If you're trying to map to "dial analog", it isn't working because mame is expecting an analog input and a button is digital (IOW, how would mame know which direction to turn when button is pressed?).

If you're looking in mame32's settings, that's not where you remap individual keys.

Ok I went into the TAB settings for the game only and the settings are for an analog input with settings for dec and inc. So I guess I can't play one of my favorite games unless I get a analog setting. How to do this , I'm unaware?? Do I get an analog gamepad and hack that or can I use the XPADDER program and remap the mouse keys? I dunno?? :dunno

I Figured it out YEA!!!    I went into the INPUT THIS GAME settings and turned off the analog controls. Then I was able to select the buttons I wanted to use for the Dial turning. Everything runs great now. :applaud:
