A few Gamelauncher questions
« on: May 03, 2003, 02:49:15 pm »
Ok, so after becoming completely frusterated with arcadeos (same problem as Chazz in http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=1299;start=0), I decided to switch to the DOS version of GameLauncher.   :o Wow!  It's so pretty!  And very easy to set up, I found... not necessarily user friendly, but quite straightforward once you get beyond that.  ;D

Anywhoo, I've got everything running the way I want it, save two issues...

1)  There's an annoying font flicker that I can't seem to do away with.  Tried enabling/disabling antialaising,  changing the screen res, font size... I'm not sure what it could be.  (running an old 266 with a voodoo3 3000  AGP, if that helps at all)

2)  Scrolling is very slow.   I know there's an option called "turbo scrolling," which solves this problem, however, as far as I can tell it only works with the keyboard.  Alas, my player 1 control is based off of a gamepad hack!  I have experimented with disabling the font animations, which speeds things up, but takes away a lot of the pretty features of GL which I don't really want to lose unless I have to.  I suppose I could set up the player 2 control to scroll as well (since it's based off a keyboard hack), but I'd still like to solve the issue with player 1 if possible.

Well, hope someone can help!
-MATT

I think you can configure a "page up" pand "page down" key to jump through your list faster.

On one of my machines with a trackball, I can just whip through the list. If I recall, isn't there is  a setting for how many lines it will scroll based on the mouse movement or something like that?

My 2 cents. ;D

A 266 is probably too slow to do the animations smoothly.

Yes, there is a setting for how much mouse movement it takes to scroll a line.  I'm not sure about gamepads, as I don't use them.

One thing that may help is to length the screen shot delay.  If the screen shot delay is to short, your PC tries to show the screen shot even though you are just scrolling past a rom.  If you lengthen the screen shot delay, it won't try to display the screenshot until you stop on a rom for a second or so.

On my CP the palyer 1 joystick scrolls up and down one line at a time (Up rrow and Down Arrow).  The player 2 joystick controls the PAGE up and down function(Ctrl and Alt).

To get rid of the font flickering, open glaunch.cfg and adjust the following:

animation_method
use_vsync
use_vram

Well i just transfered mame and game launch to my 266 p2 and it runs crap

Im using it in pure dos and it runs slow and takes about 2 seconds to move from 1 game to the other in the list :(

BUT

When i use it from windows it is fast as hell no slowdown or anything which is wierd :\

Though it was ment to run better in dos?

i dont wanna go to through windows cause i want it to load up quickly

The machine im using is a 266 P2 with 32mb of ram and a 4gig hdd

i know its not much but i could run neogeo games at almost full speed in windows using neoragex metalslug ran very good u dont notice it when it slows down i will be getting more ram for it and if i have to i will upgrade but im just wanna know why does windows make game launch run smooth with all the animations switches on yet in dos it runs bad when when animations turned on or off i dont know what to do  :-[

Nin^_^niN,

Gl does not handle the OK prompts for you.  It does not have that capability at all.

There is an option in newer releases of MAME (0.63 and higher i think)that eliminates most of the OK prompts.  The only ones that are left are the ones about known problems with a rom. I'm not sure what you mean by asd.

As far as the DOS versus Window speed, I don't have a clue.

Thanks erik i set the skip game info screen in glaunch and i dont get any msg unless there is a porblem as u stated :)

Still its wierd that it runs normal in windows but not in dos which it was intended for plus it makes my hdd sound like its scratching itself in dos but windows is fine :\ maybe the mroe ram will help when i get it

Thanks again :)

There is a windows version and a dos version of GL.  I don't think the windows version will run in DOS at all.

I'm guessing that there is some sort of configuration issue in your DOS startup.  Try running mame in windows and dos without GL and see if you see the same difference in speed.  Maybe you are not using all of the available ram in DOS or something.

I just tested it on my new pc and it has the same speed in dos using gamlaunch its so slow and its way over the limit for fast maybe i have a bad setting that hates dos i dont know i'll try just downloading it again an not changing any settings and see if its ok in dos

I know this seams like alot of trouble but its the best frontend iv seen and i will do anything to get it to run i dont want to use any of the other frontends  :-\
