Happ Vision Pro CGA In Canada
« on: September 20, 2007, 02:38:52 pm »
I'm not sure if it was here or not, but recently I recall a conversation about getting Vision Pro monitors in Canada.

Somebody said that Starburst didn't stock them and, it turns out, they were correct ... but, I was just down at Starburst (my son is home from school today and has been wanting to play the Spiderman and Family Guy pins, so I took him down while I hung around in the back) and they will order Vision Pros for you.

The cost I was quoted for a 19" CGA is Cdn$240 (plus taxes), which is still a lot more than US$135 (as per Happ), but once you factor in shipping and customs charges isn't out of line (the last VP that I bought direct from Happ for US$139 ended up costing me about Cdn$280 after exchange, shipping, duties and taxes ... and it didn't come by UPS).

It's not a stellar price, but is less than the C$360 they will quote you for the 19" WG that they stock by default.

Is also out of line given the plummeting US dollar, but still not a terrible deal and I'll likely be ordering a couple to jumpstart some projects that have been stalled by my lack of monitor repair-fu.

EDIT: I should have acknowledged that if you have to get the monitor shipped form Starburst, then it's not a significantly better deal than ordering from Happ. However, for those who are local (I'm 3 minutes away) or come in to the auctions, it may be worthwhile.

Yah I got worked over hard by brokerage when I shipped a Betson up from the US.  The end result ... still cheaper than buying it in Canada and shipping.

What did you end up paying for brokerage? I drove down to the customs warehouse and checked my Billabs monitor through myself, and only ended up paying $50. I mean, on top of the already crazy shipping price from Fedex.

$104.80 for brokerage and GST.  Total in Canadian dollars was $828 which was $70 cheaper than just the monitor itself and $340'ish cheaper than what I would have paid for the monitor + shipping in Canada.  (For a comparible Happ or a Betson)

As noted in this thread:

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=71574.0

Niemann displays offers displays in Canada, including some beautiful tri-mode monitors, and I have heard nothing but good things about them.

Unfortunately, they don't seem to have a 19" CGA, which is what I want a bunch of (I have a bunch of classic projects).

If there is an alternative source for new 19" CGA monitors in Canada, I would love to hear about it.
