ArcadeFX, partyon, Calliopa questions
« on: May 01, 2003, 09:16:49 am »
I want a non-windows looking front end for my cabinet. Been playing around with pretty much every Front-End to find what I want. Partyon is nice, but does'nt seem to work for me. It runs ok, lets you pick a game, then starts to open a window like it is loading the game...and then shuts the window right away and goes back to the menu screen. I also don't see me typing in 3000 games for the lists.

Calliopa is also nice..cool colors, very unique looking, and not to complicated (it seems). But it just seems to crash all the time, not sure what is going on with it.

ArcadeFX of course graphically is great, but I can't seem to find a way to get rid of clones. I hate them, and do not want them to show up (it just slows things down with 3000 games). Also, I am really unclear about how to put games into new catagories with the new unlock DB feature.

The other ones I have played around with are Emulaxian and mamerunner. Emulaxian rocks, but I think it may be a bit rough on my system, plus setup just plain scares me with all 3000 games (only tested it with like 20 to get a feel for it). Mamerunner is actually really nice. The only thing really that I really don't like is the part of the Interface where the games are listed. It looks way to "windows-pop-up-box" like for my tastes. Being able to launch ANY program from it is really handy though. Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,
Brian

Sounds like you would like Mamewah.

you don't have to run emulaxian in fpsarcade mode it can also work as a regular fe even without any 3d stuff visible at all ;)

if you want to keep it simple try mamewah...very easy to setup.

if you want more power then that emutron and lazarus are good alternatives in addition to the ones you allready did try.

I love to here opinions like this about different emulators.  Nice specifics.  Pros and Cons.  So many times if anyone asks about emulators people are reserved about giving their opinions because no two people are alike or something.  It's useful, though.  Even if the opinion is crap someone else will chime in, "That's crap!" and in the end there will be some sort of majority consensus about different aspects of different emulators.
Sure, I should still try different ones to get a taste, but it's nice to have a starting point -- to at least build on some of the legwork others have already done.

Personally, I think the problem is that there are several frontends that all have good qualities, but no ONE frontend has encompassed them all. The day this happens is the day I weep tears of joy!

I knwo what ya mean about hearing things about different front-ends. I have been playing arounf with this stuff for about a year trying to find a Front End that I really like completely. It makes me understand why so many people start thier own. Alas, that is beyond my limits...

I have tried almost every front end that I know of. A few that I really liked certain things about were:

A-Player  -  had a nice look to it, pretty easy to set up. Was bummed it went away

Partyon - If I could get it to work =(

Calliopa - See Above :)

Lazarus looks cool, but I cant seem to get anywhere with making it work...I need to wait for a good set-up guide for that one.

ArcadeFX - If i can ever figure a way to get rid of clones and an easy way to make my own catagories and put the games in them, this will probably be the one I go with.

Linux - For some reason, I really like the look of several of the linux front-ends, maybe because they look unlike Windows. Sadly, I have no knowledge of Linux whatsoever, so that's not gonna happen.

There ar eothers I have tried as well.  Emulaxian is still amazing, but way intense setup.

The search continues...
